Parents Set To Sue Buggy Maker Over Injuries

Parents Set To Sue Buggy Maker Over Injuries

Parents who say their children's fingers were injured by Maclaren buggies are planning to sue the manufacturer, it has been reported.

It has been alleged that Maclaren were aware more than a year ago that children had been injured by the buggies.

More than 15 families have now sought legal advice and law firm Russell, Jones and Walker is gathering claims against the company.

A statement from the law firm said: "We are already representing numerous parents whose children have been injured, despite Maclaren claiming their pushchairs are not at fault.

"We are already handling 15 potential claims where children have been hurt, allegedly by their Maclaren buggies, and we are urging Trading Standards to issue a product recall to stop any further injuries."

However the company did not recall its products in the UK as it said the buggy complied with European safety legislation.

A statement on the company's website said: "Our commitment to parents is to provide the safest buggy on the market. There is simply nothing more important to Maclaren than the safety of a child.

"To provide comfort and reassurance, we will send you a set of covers to fit the elbow joint of your Maclaren buggy."

The BBC says it has been contacted by more than 30 parents who claim their children needed hospital treatment after catching their fingers in the buggies.

Liz Harmer, from Manningtree, Essex, says her daughter Olivia needed plastic surgery after slicing off her fingertip in the hinge of her buggy.

She told the BBC: "Olivia screamed and there was a lot of blood and it was only after she folded up the buggy that we found the little tip of Olivia's finger in the hinge. The most frustrating thing about this is that it has happened again and again."

Safety kits are available, free of charge, from the Maclaren customer services department (phone 01327 841320)

What do you think? Should parents be suing the company?
