Mum Beats Off Wild Animal, Armed Only With A Duster

Never underestimate the power of a mother when her family is threatened.

A mum in British Columbia fought off a wild cougar attacking her seven-year-old son, even though she was armed only with a cleaning rag.

The Globe and Mail reports that David Metzler Jr. was attacked by the animal on New Year's Eve. The cougar pinned him down in the snow as he played outside his local church, leaving him bleeding from the head and neck.

David's mother, Mary Metzler remembers: "I saw this animal on top of my son with his mouth at his head. I knew if I went back and took time to call for help, it would be too late."

Mary had been working as a volunteer cleaner at the Mennonite church in Danskin, British Columbia. On seeing what was happening to her son, she grabbed the nearest thing to hand – an old cloth used for cleaning – and whacked the animal around the head with it. It seemed to do the trick, as the cougar then dropped the boy and ran off.

Metzler had taken her three children (aged two, five and seven) with her when she went to tidy the church. As they were playing outside, she was alerted to the cougar attack when she heard the children screaming. She told the Globe and Mail: "I've heard children scream before, but nothing like this. I knew instantly. It was a petrified scream."

Luckily, David Jr's injuries proved to be superficial and he was back in school within a few days.

The boy's father David Metzler Sr said that the cougar should have known better: "It's a mother's instinct: 'Don't mess with my kids.'"

How far would you go to protect your kids? Would you have attempted to see off a Cougar with a rag?
