A 12-year-old girl has made headlines in the USA after she hid from burglars and called 911, helping police catch three suspects.
Burglars broke into the home of MacKenize Hughes in Troutdale, Oregon, on Monday afternoon.
The 12-year-old was at home alone and hid in her bedroom under her covers and called 911.
She told police what was happening inside the house and described the car outside.
Hughes told NBC's Today programme: "I heard a knock on the door. It was this Hispanic guy I've never seen in my life. So I just sat there really, really quietly, and he kept on pounding on the door. And all of a sudden, I saw him turn the knob."
She ran to her room and called the police. At one point one of the burglars came into the bedroom.
"I could just feel one of them staring right at me, like right there by me," Hughes told NBC. "I was freaked out. I felt so sick to my stomach."
Police arrived quickly and arrested three men.
Sgt. Steven Bevens of the Troutdale Police Department told NBC News that the girl was a great example of how to act in a crisis.
"She did exactly what everyone should do," he said. "It was great."
Hughes' quick actions may also have helped police with investigations into a rash of burglaries in the area.
Detectives in Troutdale have DNA samples from the suspects and will compare them with DNA taken from another burglary in the nearby city of Gresham.
According to local station KATU there have been five burglaries in Troutdale in the last few months, but this was the first time anyone was at home.
