Denise Van Outen Gives Up Breastfeeding - Because It's Too Public

New mum Denise Van Outen has given up breastfeeding - because she says she struggled to to get any privacy to feed her daughter Betsey.

The TV presenter claims she was nervous about being photographed by the paparazzi when breastfeeding.

Her admission comes after Kathryn Blundel, deputy editor of Mother and Baby magazine, wrote a provocative piece saying she found breastfeeding 'creepy' and felt her breasts were part of her sexuality.

In her first interview since becoming a mother, Denise, 36, said: "I probably should have persevered a bit longer than three weeks.

"But I can't be sitting in Starbucks and breastfeeding, because they [photographers] are taking pictures.

"Another time, I was at the back of a really long queue at the Post Office to get Betsy a passport, knowing that in the next half hour she was going to wake up and cry, wanting a feed.

"And, sure enough, when I got to the front, that's exactly what she did. And I felt so conscious of the pressures of everybody looking, tutting and waiting to see how I dealt with the situation because they knew my face."

Miss Van Outen, who married West End actor Lee Mead last year, also explained that she wasn't producing enough milk, and her husband wanted to be involved in the feeding process too.

Medical advice from the NHS advises that 'breast is best' in terms of nutrition for a baby's development. Although eight in ten women start off breast feeding, only one in five continue until their babies are six months old.

Apokesman for breastfeeding support organisation La Leche League sympathised with the presenter, as her worries about feeding in public are common. She said: 'In the early days, mothers can feel self-conscious about breast feeding in public, but it does get easier with practice.'
