DESIGNER: Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte

INSPIRATION: Beautiful sleepwalkers

TOP LOOKS: Vintage-looking chiffon point d'esprit dresses with alpaca-trimmed shoulders and draped with pearls at the back; hearty wool and alpaca sweaters; lace and floral chiffon tops

ACCESSORIES: Colourful, sky-high Nicholas Kirkwood lace-up shoes; suede garden gloves with mohair-trim; sparkling hair clips

WHO WAS THERE: Natalie Portman, Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, and Tavi the pint-sized blogger

WHAT WE THOUGHT: The Mulleavy's new Rodarte collection was so sumptuous was that it was hard to know where to look. It's no wonder they are considered to be American couturieres. Autumn's outing was strong on separates, from a mauve matelassé jacket to an Aztec-patterned skirt. Chunky knit sweaters paired with sheer floral tops appeared throughout and printed wrap skirts were layered over slim cropped pants. The show stoppers were the long, collaged, chiffon dresses with contrasting floral sashes and knit frills at the shoulder.

Though it might be hard for a civilian to pull off some of Rodarte's more ethereal looks - some of which seemed too esoteric for even the celeb-heavy audience to pull off - they are guaranteed to appear in many a glossy magazine story. Perhaps the sisters from Pasadena, true artists who are fresh off a successful Target collaboration - were designing for themselves this season.
