If you'd rather stay close to home, head to The Spa at The Mount Somerset, near Taunton, which opens on October 11 after a multi-million pound overhaul. Designed as a traditional bathhouse, there's a hydrotherapy pool and a thermal suite with sauna and steam room, plus two signature treatments, Peaceful Earth Facial and Body Cocoon, designed with the Comfort Zone range. Rates start from £145 for a double room including breakfast and VAT.

Parisian brand Anne Sémonin – a big favourite of Dita Von Teese and Cheryl Cole - is opening new spas at Serenity in the City, a boutique spa in Newcastle, as well as country retreat Langdale Hotel & Spa in the Lake District

And Glasgow's first luxury spa at the five-star Blythswood Square Hotel opened this month – with 10,000 square feet of pampering and a seaweed bath. Packages start from £125 for a half day visit.

Or for some long-haul luxury, Tamarind Spa on Barbados' west coast is opening on November 1. It's designed for personalised pampering, with just two treatment rooms and a spa pool, to create your own bespoke set of therapies using local ingredients like Bajan sea salt and Barbadian Moscovado brown sugar.

But it wouldn't be a proper treat without some freebies, right? Online booking service BookaSpa, which sponsors National Spa Week, is entering anyone who books on or before September 26 into a prize draw to win a luxury spa break. With more than 120 members, you can track down deals by postcode or whether you're looking to be healthy or indulgent
