It's her fifth cover in a decade for the magazine. This time she's taken time out of her summer holidays in Tuscany to work with Elle for no other reason than that they asked her. There's no ulterior motive - no movie or cause to promote - for the accompanying interview. It's just Kate laid bare, talking about the things close to her heart.
Love and marriage
Her new boyfriend, Muse front man Matt Bellamy is "lovely," and, though she's not looking for marriage, she says that divorce doesn't put her off. "I'll just see what happens. I think a lot of times people are terrified of love and stop themselves from experiencing it. I don't ever want to get that jaded. I do believe in love. I believe that when you really open yourself up to love, it's the most beautiful thing."
It appears Kate's on a sabbatical of sorts. "I have no interest in doing anything right now," she says. "I think that happens sometimes. You get burnt out. I have to recharge. Artistically, I have zero competitive nature – to the point where I wish I had a little more sometimes."
Dressing for comfort and adding meaningful accessories, is Kate's style mantra. "I love comfortable clothes and a lot of accessories," she tells Elle. "My girlfriend Jen gave me this great turquoise bracelet eight years ago and I wear it all the time. And Mom [Goldie Hawn] has made me some special pieces. She finds stones and likes to design pieces around them. For my birthday this year, she made me a gold necklace with a comedy/tragedy mask pendant. It has a little diamond as the tear."
The full shoot and interview appears in the October issue of Elle, out now. Kate is not the only cover star this month. There are four other birthday covers to collect starring supermodels Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Coco Rocha, and designer John Galliano.
