Dubbed fashion's fairy godmother, Lulu Kennedy has earned an earned a reputation as the London fashion scene's premiere fashion scout (and a rather fabulous wardrobe).
Since forming designer collective Fashion East 10 years ago, Kennedy has spent her days nurturing and supporting some of Britain's most exciting and noteworthy names, from Gareth Pugh to Roksanda Illincic, and Jonathan Saunders to Holly Fulton.
Now with the first generation of her fashionable family members all grown up, Kennedy celebrated last month by launching Lulu & Co, an initiative that saw her rerelease iconic pieces from the designers that she has championed over the past decade.
We asked this fashion trailblazer what makes her tick.
Who is your style icon and why?
Grace Jones, because she represents anarchy, but in a very controlled slick way.
What's that one piece of clothing that every woman needs in her wardrobe?
A well tailored jacket that you can throw on over anything that makes you look pulled together.
Which designer(s) do you most admire and why?
Helmut Lang is quite a hero for me. I like his modernism and precision tempered with his little sprinklings of surprises.
What look do you love but doubt you could pull off?
Rodarte. I would just look too crazy.
What do you wear when nobody's looking?
Around the house I wear oversize t shirts and cashmere socks...I wouldn't really mind who saw me.
What was your last fashion faux pas?
I don't think I should do strapless cocktail dresses...I was sort of falling out the top of it.
What inspired you to do what you do?
Meeting House of Jazz got me involved in fashion on a day to day level, we lived and hung out in East London in the late 90s and had lots of fun.
What makes you happy?
Going to Mexico and lazing around on the beach.
What makes you sad?
When I see old people in the street who look like they're not coping and are lonely.
How and where do you do your best work?
I'm an early morning person, I think straight and can get loads done on my laptop in bed.
Do you read any of the fashion or style blogs? What's your favourite?
Style.com, Fashionista.com, Jak & Jil, Stylebubble, Seamlessfashion.
What is your most extravagant fashion purchase?
A Margiela coat when I was a student...I couldn't afford to eat for a whole term after that!
Describe your style in five words.
Scruffy, unpredictable, laid back, colourful, playful.
What's the most stylish city in the world and why?
For me it's London. It breaks new trends and mixes up styles like nowhere else.
What's your secret style address? Which store do you head to when you want to buy something utterly different/unique?
I shop vintage. Blondie on Commercial Street in E1 is always a good beat.
Fictional, real, dead or alive, who would you like to swap wardrobes with and why?
Miuccia Prada. Can you imagine her wardrobe?!
What's your fashion weakness/what item do you own multiple versions of?
Party dresses. I have more than I could ever need...unless I party full time for the rest of my life!
What's your earliest fashion memory?
Thinking that my glittery Biba wellies were amazing.
What's your best piece of fashion advice?
Find a style you're comfortable in rather than trying hard to pull off. It'll show.
What are your three desert island fashion staples?
Mascara. Eyebrow pencil. High heels.
Which up and coming fashion talents do you rate? Who is going to be a household name 12 months from now?(Could be a designer, illustrator, model etc)
A beautiful model called Adwoa Aboah.
