Kelly Osbourne's had quite a year, filled with its share of personal triumphs and heartbreaks.

The style icon-in-the-making turned cover girl for the February issue of Cosmopolitan, and opened up about her struggle with food and her incredible weight loss, which saw the rock royal reveal a svelte size 6 frame this year.

"When I got out of rehab and stopped using drugs, I replaced drugs with food. I was emotionally eating and hated the way I looked, but I couldn't mask my self-loathing with pills any more," Osbourne tells the magazine. "When you're a fat girl in Hollywood, it's not fun. You never get looked at the way skinny girls do. I covered it up with my humour, but suddenly I found myself unfunny and hated what I saw. "

In the accompanying spread, shot by photographer James White, Osbourne looks gorgeous in a selection of retro-inspired fashions (flirty playsuits, spotty teadresses, fitted, figure-hugging frocks and prom dress for her cover shot, where she poses with her Pomeranian, Sid) that show off the star's amazing new physique and play up her glamour girl, vintage-style image, complete with a bouffant coif and deep red lips.

Kelly credits her appearance on Dancing With The Stars as changing her relationship with food: "I was asked to do Dancing With The Stars and I only did it to lose weight ... I made a life change and re-educated myself about food and eating right. I didn't know anything before about eating in moderation - I didn't know how to be healthy and I'd never really worked out... I went to the doctor and he gave me information about which foods I should eat for my body and blood type. I ate more food when I was losing weight than I ever have in my life," she tells the magazine.

Osbourne also confesses she debated the idea of going under the knife. "I did [consider a gastric band]. I was so desperate to lose weight - but I backed out. I realised you can fix that problem, but the mental side isn't fixed. It's about doing things to make you feel good about yourself. You can lose weight, but if you still feel shitty, it doesn't matter."

And not only is Kelly looking fabulous, she's feeling amazing as well. "I'm the most content I've ever been," she tells Cosmo. "I feel like I got a second chance. I burnt a lot of bridges and was rude to a lot of people, but that was because I was angry at myself so it came out in ways that, a lot of the time, made other people look bad. Now, when people are willing to be good to me and give me a second chance, it makes me feel so lucky and I appreciate my life a lot more."

For more Kelly, the full interview appears in the February issue of Cosmopolitan, on sale 6th January.
