The fashion designer Charles Nolan died yesterday at his home in Manhattan aged 53 after a battle with cancer of the head and neck.

Nolan designed for labels such as Christian Dior, Anne Klein and Ellen Tracy before going on to establish his own label in 2004 after taking a year's hiatus to work on Democratic candidate Howard Dean's presidential campaign.

Nolan's collections showcased his preppy, classic American aesthetic while incorporating modernising touches, particularly in terms of colour and cut.

An announcement on his website reads: "It is with a heavy heart that we share some sad news with you. Charles passed away this morning ever so peacefully with dignity and style - just as he lived every day of his life. The family has kindly asked that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to Women In Need, an organization that provides housing, help and hope to New York City women and their families who are homeless and disadvantaged."
