If you struggle to manage your five portions of fruit and veg a day, there is an easy way - and it could help you maintain your weight too, say experts. According to a study carried out by University of California researchers, drinking a glass of vegetable juice each day could double the veg portions you eat.

The study involved 90 healthy people drinking a glass of V8 vegetable juice a day for 12 weeks. When asked, nine out of ten of the volunteers said they felt they were doing themselves good by drinking the juice.

A separate study, carried out by researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, found that drinking one to two glasses of vegetable juice as part of a calorie-controlled diet could help you lose weight too. In their tests, the researchers put 81 overweight volunteers on a diet. Some were asked to drink one or two glasses of vegetable juice a day, while others didn't drink any.

After 12 weeks, the vegetable juice drinkers lost an average of 4lb, while the non-juice drinkers only lost an average of 1lb. And of course the juice drinkers were shown to have higher levels of vitamin C and potassium than the non-juice drinkers too.

Maybe it's time to switch your morning glass of OJ and have a veggie juice instead? It could be the easiest way to get all those servings of vegetables in your diet. And it could help you keep your weight down.
