The Oscars Red Carpet: Dannii's Verdict

Robust reds wrestled elegant neutrals for red carpet supremacy and natural makeup and pared back accessories were the order of the day at the 83rd Academy Awards. Here were my style stand-outs on the movie industry's night of nights. Dx

It takes a super-confident starlet to rock red on the red carpet but Jennifer Lawrence does it with style. Jennifer balances her ka-pow, body-skimming Calvin Klein Collection dress with flawless, natural makeup and simple flowing hair. She's kept the accessories to an absolute minimum – a good move when you're wearing such a knockout dress – hitting the perfect note with just a single gold bangle.

He had me at 'bow tie'. Best Actor Colin Firth looks devilishly dapper in his Tom Ford dinner suit. Love this look right down to the detailing on his shirt buttons and the sneak peek of a kerchief in his breast pocket. An ensemble fit for a king.

Christian flouts tuxedo tradition by wearing a black shirt with his black jacket and tie. I can't help hoping he's growing that ginger beard for a movie role.

I don't love this 19th Century-inspired 'costume' designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood as much as Helena's BAFTAs' ensemble, but I rate it well ahead of her Golden Globes gown from earlier this red carpet season. The tumble of curls is very Helena, her fan-shaped silver clutch is on my nominees list for 'best bag' and the Union Jack garter is a cute touch.

I'm a fan of Marchesa and Hailee looks princess perfect in this beaded, champagne coloured prom-style dress. Her makeup is fresh and pretty and her high bun adds a sophisticated touch. Love the satin shoes but would probably have left the Alice band at home.

Amy covers up in a midnight blue sequin-encrusted L'wren Scott gown. Her toned arms look fabulous in that capped sleeve and the gently waved Veronica Lake-style 1940s hair frames her face perfectly. With the high neckline on this dress I think I'd have left off the Cartier necklace and stuck with the earrings and diamond/emerald bracelet.

Michelle makes pale pack a punch in a pearl-encrusted Chanel column dress. Platinum pixie cut, picture perfect makeup, discrete earring/cocktail ring combo – Michelle is a gleaming red carpet star.

If you've been reading my pieces for MyDaily you'll know that Elie Saab is my designer of choice if I ever walk the Oscars red carpet. He hasn't let me down tonight. Mila's pale lavender gown is a triumph! That neckline, nipped in waist and flowing skirt emphasise her curves, and her glossy up-do somehow manages to look structured and natural at the same time. Nice to see Mila keeping it simple in the jewellery department.

Javier looks roguishly handsome - the waistcoat is an elegant touch. Good to see him following the red carpet rules for man-scaping and keeping that stubble trimmed and tidy. Penelope Cruz is ravishing in red – one of the colours of the night. Gorgeous natural hair and makeup, pretty drop earrings, and get a load of that fabulous post-baby body!!!

I think this pink champagne chiffon Monique Lhullier confection could be one of Mandy's all-time finest red carpet looks. The scattering of sparkles across her décolletage is stunning. Her skin is positively glowing – the strong lips/soft eye makeup combo really works for her. The earrings are possibly a touch heavy and could perhaps have been substituted for something daintier.
