DESIGNER: Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

INSPIRATION: Lagerfeld was in a dark mood this season, and set designers transformed the Grand Palais into a ashy post-apocalyptic wasteland, backed by a thundering orchestral rendition of the Cure's A Forest .

TOP LOOKS: The mood remained sombre with a palette that stayed shadowy and sinister throughout. Lagerfeld played with the proportions of the Chanel tweed jacket, reimagining it with slightly man-sized, rounded shoulders, and teamed with wide, ankle-skimming tweed trousers. For evening things got goth with black lace eveningwear and jumpsuits with huge lapels worn with swooping full length coats for vampire effect.

ACCESSORIES: Sturdy black hobnail boots and spiky kitten heels.

WHO WAS THERE: Alexa Chung and Lily Allen were f-row neighbours, while Kanye West, Mario Testino, Florence Welch, Leigh Lezark could be seen nattering together.

WHAT WE THOUGHT: When Chanel poster girl Freja Beja opened the show in slouchy black trousers and jacket in stomping great boots, we knew we were in for something a bit different to the recent Chanel offerings. But what it boiled down to was not the end of the world as we know it, instead, the clothes on the runway provided amongst the most powerful expressions of the andronynous boy/girl trend that has dominated this fashion week. Get ready to man up...
