Sad news today fashion fans.

It's been confirmed that after five years at the helm of Balmain, Christophe Decarnin is to leave.

Rumours have been rife that all was not well within the brand since the designer's conspicuous absense from the autumn/winter 2011 show in Paris last month.

At the time, fashion insiders were suggesting that he was suffering from exhaustion, with a spokesperson from the house confirming that he was resting on doctor's orders.

Since joining the French fashion house back in 2005, Christophe transformed what was a relatively unknown label into one of the hottest brands of the moment - complete with an army of A-list followers - thanks to his sexed-up rock-chick designs, and love of leather, studs, skinnies, minis and of course, the bold-shoulder.

Balmain is expected to announce his successor later on today.
