Andrew Collinge Talks Updos, Top Trends And Celebrity Hairstyles

Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Collinge has recently launched his two minute updo app which has already proven to be a huge success at the iStore. MyDaily caught up with Collinge to find out more about the updo with one hair pin trick and to ask him the all important question; how will Kate Middleton have her hair styled on her wedding day?

Your two minute updo app has recently launched. How has that made a difference to hairdressing?

The app has launched with a lot of positive interest; it's had good reviews. It's an educational tool and it's great for those women that want to try new ideas. The styles are effective, simple to do and clients can get great results. It's the perfect vehicle really as you can pause and rewind when you like. Before, the only way of demonstrating was at a trade event or through videos or books but they aren't always that easy to follow. The app is for a great cause too; all the proceeds we receive from Apple will raise funds for adults with learning difficulties in the North West to support the Design for Life appeal.

The app demonstrates how to create an updo with just one hair pin. Does it really work?

Long hair is what I've enjoyed working with the most throughout my career and putting up the hair with one pin is my trademark. It sounds like a bit of a gimmick, but often less is more and if you get it right, the hair is actually more secure. There is a perception that long hair can be quite difficult and complicated but I'm hoping to prove that long hair is quite simple and fun.

What are the biggest hair trends to look out for this season?

The hottest hair trend will be known to the world on 29th April so we will have to wait and see. At the moment, I love the look seen in the Louis Vuitton campaign. It's quite 70s but it's a simple style; side parting with a fringe flicked across the face. It can easily be adapted to long hair.

Do you have any top tips on how to achieve the 70s look?

Blow dry the hair with the flick across the face and blow dry the rest of the hair straight. Then twist or braid the sides of the hair round the hairline and secure the hair at the nape of the neck in a bun or a knot. It's a really strong retro 70s style, a kind of Studio 54 type look. Braids are also still strong this season. Last year we saw fishtail braids but now they're a bit looser this season.

Which celebrity styles do you get asked to re-create in the salon?

In terms of colour, Drew Barrymore's style has been hugely requested in the salon. It's the grown out look so it looks like you've got big roots. A great tip for this look is to braid the hair into four or five sections and when it's dry; you add a real wave to the haircut. I also think Emma Watson's hair looks great. She's proved that short hair can look very stylish and modern; it's a great cut for the moment.

What style would you like to see Kate Middleton wear on her wedding day?

It's not really for me to say. I think she's a very beautiful girl and she has a very natural look, so I think the hairstyle will be something that she will feel comfortable in. I would have thought she will wear her hair up with a tiara, but I don't think it will be a particularly elaborate hairstyle. It will be quite classic, very stylish and I think she will carry it off perfectly.
