Brand Beckham clearly knows no bounds. David Beckham is to follow his wife's footsteps and start a second career in the fashion industry. He is set to launch the project with long term business partner Simon Fuller, which, they say, will harness "the global appeal of the world's best-known football star."
But while Victoria Beckham is famed for her red carpet-friendly designs, David is getting just a little bit more intimate.
According to a statement released by his management today, he plans to launch a line of bodywear (which as far as we understand, means underwear). He'll also be throwing some man fragrance into the mix.
The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder will launch a scent, called Homme by David Beckham, in September. This follows previous his 'n' hers scent Intimately Beckham and David Beckham Instinct, which launced in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
As for the new line of pants, details have not been released and the launch date hasn't yet been specified.
"I have had the idea of doing a bodywear collection for some time now. The push go do something of my own really came as a result of my collaboration with Armani", he told WWD. "They told me that their gross turnover in 2007 was around 16 million euros and after the campaign in 2008 it went up to 31 million euros in 2008." That would explain the career change then.
David added that he's already started some work on the designs and we're assume he's hand sewing the samples himself. No doubt they'll be modelled on a David's tattoo-clad body on a billboard soon.
We just hope that Victoria doesn't feel like David's new fashion venture is treading on her toes. Still, we're sure more A-listers will be comfortable modelling her designs on the red carpet than David's underwear.
