HS2 Plans Criticised By Mayor Of London Boris Johnson

The Mayor Of London is understood to have serious concerns about the government's multi-billion plans to build a high-speed railway line between London and Birmingham, according to a leaked document seen by the Sunday Telegraph.

Boris Johnson has branded the proposed line 'perverse' and 'inadequate' in a letter to a group which opposes the £34bn line. His comments will cheer many Conservative MPs representing seats in London's green belt, who privately question the merits of the scheme.

The new line would cut through acres of countryside in Tory-held seats north of London.

When it entered office the government decided to overturn Labour's plans to build a third runway at Heathrow. Ministers believe the high-speed rail line would ease congestion on the existing West Coast Mainline and provide an alternative to air travel within the UK.

Although Conservative MPs rarely voice concerns about the viability and cost-effectiveness of the line, many believe the project could be an expensive white-elephant which would only be affordable for business-class commuters.

Members of the Commons Transport Committee have recently questioned whether it would be cheaper to expand the existing West Coast line, rather than building a new one through some of England's most picturesque countryside.

As the Tory website Conservative Home points out, this isn't the first time Boris Johnson has questioned the merits of the new line. The Mayor of London is increasingly criticising coalition government policies, particularly on changes to housing benefit. Political commentators expect Boris to increasingly distance himself from some of David Cameron's policies in the months leading up to the elections for the Mayor of London next May.

Boris makes a valid point. London's transport system is struggling to cope as it is - without the influx of yet more passengers from the regions. HS2 would just make our capital city even more overcrowded and our economy yet more London-centric. HS2 might it's true, benefit people and businesses in Birmingham - plus Leeds and Manchester if it ever gets that far. But almost everywhere else in the UK is a loser. 1. It would mean fewer direct trains to London from other towns and cities, and less to spend on improving local transport. 2. More of our fast-disappearing countryside would be lost for future generations to enjoy. 3. At £32 billion and counting, it would be ruinously expensive... Even when we've paid down the deficit, we need to invest in our schools, hospitals and long-term care for the elderly before unaffordable luxuries like this. 4. And with video calling and conferencing and live video streaming of events over the internet forecast to soar over 10 years, I suspect our children and grandchildren won't even need it. Time's running out to respond to the Government consultation and sign the petition to stop this outrageous folly in its tracks.

I think we need to think about the large amount of countryside that is going to be impacted here. We have such beautiful areas in the Chilterns that are going to be destroyed not only homes of wildlife but people. Wonderful old historic cottages and houses all to be destroyed by the proposed plans. As far as I am concerned my vote is a certain NO

Is this more about the London mayoral elections next may or has Boris changed his mind? He has always been a very positive supporter of HS2 because he understands the need for UK plc to be competitive, although he is absolutely right to question the impact on London it would be good to get his comments on the UK's competitive position without updated infrastructure or is the third runway also back on the agenda?

London has the best transport system in the world - continued efforts to improve it, especially for those who work in London yet cannot afford to live in its heart, should be applauded.

Not if it sacrifices the limited countryside. England is not as spacious as France.
