Mayor Banned From Almost Every Pub In His Town

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- A mayor has been banned from almost every pub in his town after a long-running row with a local landlord.

Teesdale Pub Watch imposed a 12-month ban on councillor Tony Cooke, mayor of Barnard Castle in County Durham, for allegedly being rude to staff at the Beaconsfield pub while buying a pint of shandy.

He offered an apology for any perceived slight after the incident almost exactly a year ago but publicans Andy and Sue Hill did not accept it.

At a meeting of the Pub Watch scheme on Wednesday night, the majority of the 20 members voted in favour of barring Mr Cooke for a year.

Callers to his home were referred to the town council by a woman answering the phone.

A spokesman for Barnard Castle Town Council said: "The town council is extremely disappointed to learn of Pub Watch's decision. It is of serious concern that the decision was based on an alleged incident of exactly a year ago and that Pub Watch presumably chose to reach their decision without receiving any evidence from or on behalf of councillor Cooke."

The council said the Mayor may appeal against the ban once he has formally received a letter from the scheme informing him of its decision.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: "The Pub Watch scheme is run by licensees who make their own decisions about matters relating to crime and disorder on their premises.

"This incident occurred a year ago and was brought to Wednesday's meeting by a town publican. The decision to bar the mayor for 12 months was taken by the members who were present and the matter has at no time been subject to police investigation or enquiry.

"The police do not make decisions about who is excluded from the Pub Watch scheme and do not vote."

hahaha, We all know that the USA officialdom is the absolute worse in the western world for interfering in it's citizens lives over the merest thing...banned from keeping a vegetable patch in your front garden?...arrested for being naked in your own home?...the merest sight of a nipple on TV causes a national heart attack...GB is a positive beacon of liberty in comparison.

It'll save the Mayor a small fortune over the year, as supermarkets and off licences are much cheaper places to buy a Beer.

Anyone would think that they were opening new Pubs at the rate of 4 or five per week, instead of closing them at the rate of 39 per week in the UK. Still losing one more customer won't make it that much harder to pay the business rates set by the council.. or will it?

i do hope the mayor is a football fan and drinks lager

that sounds like discrimination -- the guy apologized, and it's not like he's some ASBO violent drunk.

but in typical fashion, he apologized for any PERCEIVED slight. it's one of those non-apology apologies
09:19 on 11/07/2011
I had an apology like that once. "If we did anything to offend you (?) we are sorry."
They did offend me of course, but their apology was like a SLAP. I avoided them
in the future.

How civil, in the US of A the patrons are more concerned about the "god" given right to bear concealed weapons.
22:44 on 10/07/2011
Its not "God Given" It is given by the Constitution, A document created as a reult of many years of British tyranny. It is easy to see how one might mistake the Consitution for a document created by god. However it was created by man ,and Im sure "god" had a hand in it. The Second Amendment was influednced by the will of the founders to make sure the people could protect themselves from all enemies. At the time those enemies were specifically british.

There was no "tyranny", that's just American mythologising, the settlers wanted the same rights as "natural born Englishmen"..failing to get them they went to war and wrote that silly constitution, which nowadays is helping to keep you in the 18th century compared to western Europe.

Due process? We don't need no steenkeeng due process!"

How can it be a protected decision to ban someone from your business if you've never actually set foot there? At the least it has to be some kind of trust law violation. What if you're one of two house painters in town AND you own a paint supply store. Can you claim your competitor was unruly and have him banned from ALL the paint suppliers in the area? What if the "Teesdale Merchants Association" decides they will "honour" the Pub Watch's decision? Can they actually ban him from EVERY business in town? What happens when they start banning primarily Indians and Arabs (purely coincidental, of course...)? Do they still have that right?

He was banned from the pubs not all businesses. If the person that owns the pub want to ban someone they have full right to do so.

It's called 'free market' and 'private property'.

It is not 'discrimination' - he is being banned for his behavior, something well within his own control.

One suspects that this is not about a single instance.

Really? Why do you suspect this? Is it because the report says that it IS about a single instance? Or that the Pub Watch refused to give him a fair and open hearing? Or that he was informed of the ban without any prior warning or notice? Or that he was never charged with any criminal disturbance or behaviour?

"Private property" rights are limited in commerce. You can't discriminate without legitimate reason, and "my friend said he didn't like him" isn't a legitimate reason. You may not want Indian or Black people in your home, but you can't keep them out of your business; that's part of your licence.

Again HP tells their stories wrong without proof reading and says whatever it wants but if u comment u have no freedom of speech. Whats up with that HP? Ifu say somehting they dont agree with 99% of the time they will pu;; it or iit will never get posted. Some get through as they must "keep up appearances" . Notice how when u reads all comment (it will say 2000 comments) and after the first page u go to next page and all same comments there then maybe a few more at bottom go to next page same thing. they turn 200 comments into 1500 so u htink there is a good dialogue going on when in fact its the same posts over and over til u are there for hours sifting through them . next page means NEXT PAGE HP!!!!!!

Also if u noticed HP will put its front page articles mixed with what should be on page 13. then on page 4 they have really serious news but u have to again, go through the pages get the pop up ads EVEN WITH POP UP FILTER ON (dont know how they do that either) Aol used to be a great news source and had wonderful chats and I still pay the 4.99 a mo after i found that was free ( so i could have them keep my files , otherwise they dont if u have a crash) But when they dropped from 9.99 they didnt tell anyone. You complian they drop to 4.99 and say without the 4.99 ur pics and anything saved can be lost in a crash. I dont mind 4.99 but I do mind the way they screwed Aol up and turned it into a propaganda machine and full blown ad agency. And they paid A. Huffington some 300 million to take it over hahha this is what we get.

And AOL has savaged the comments sections. Well the progressive comments. Wing nuts are still free to rant, insult, smear, and spew unlimited vitriol - so long as they don't curse or criticize HP.

I am guessing the Pubs are not aware that the Mayor is in charge of the local Health Inspectors?
17:09 on 10/07/2011
Apart from Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London every other Mayor in England is a figurehead and doesn't have any executive powers.

Yes HP does this on a regular basis. They mislead with headlines. This one looks like a mistake (hmmm) but i doubt it. The other day it was Casey anthony's $1million dollar offer. Then there was not a word of any offer or a million dollars anywhere in the article and yes i read it 5 times to look for it. even read all the stupid sidelines and advertise, ments ,,, I fell for their ploy to get me to read ads. They really need to be held accountable for misleading headlines.. They do it on a regular basis. U click on article and find that the story is either absolutley off base with headline or had nothing to do with headline. I hope they will get rid of whoever is in charge of this. They are a news agency first and foremost then Aol gavbe HP control and Aol has sucked ever since. Well sucked worse than b4.. I almost dont believe a word i read on it anymore. example (they didnt run this) MOM OF 15 HAS QUINTUPLETS..... then the article would say some poor woman had 15 kids from other peoples old marriages and adopts the quintupltes. The headline should have said ... MOM WITH 15 KIDS DEDCIES TO ADOPT QUINTUPLETS ....atleast there would be some trut to headline.
