Actor and comedian Steve Coogan appeared on Newsnight on Friday and said that he was "delighted" by the closure of the News of the World over the phone hacking scandal.

Coogan ripped into former-News of the World journalist Paul McMullen during a panel discussion that also included former-BBC Director General Greg Dyke.

In an earlier interview on the programme Coogan said that in his opinion the News of the World was: "A misogynistic, xenophobic, single parent-hating, asylum seeker-hating newspaper and it's gone to the wall and I'm delighted."

Pot, kettle, black?
What possible interest can we have what an "actor / comedian" has to say about something so important?

this morning on tv he admitted he has been asked by police to be interviewed under caution but declined to attend - another case of thinking the press are above the law - oh, wait a minute haven't they have been working together though. McMullen also admitted to phone hacking and used the excuse that politics would be dirtier without the exposes produced with these methods.

I have to agree with Coogan, Paul McMullen came across as a perfect example of all that is wrong with the tabloid press today.

His nihilistic cynicism was breathtaking compounded by his inability to see how obnoxious he was. The impression given was that he saw nothing wrong in hacking Milly`s phone, it was just a money making opportunity for him.

The future of the press is here, the tabloids are the past. At least as far as informed comment go`s.
