So maybe we don't need so many 'media studies' graduates after all?

Nearly unlimited jobs in China for native English speaking college graduates.

...and the ones we hire for receptionists with a minimum of hours are counted as having a job?

Isn't that the truth.   Ten years ago, the job would have gone to someone out of high school or a  certificate in office skills.  The college graduate can't pay back the student loans on the salary and the person out of high school can't find a job.   I wouldn't want to be 20 again or if I were, I'd leave the country if I could.

I am in no way surprised that graduates find it difficult to get employment, they study the wrong subject, because it's easy to get a degree in media studies than in a useful subject like the sciences or being a doctor or dentist, they would then be an asset to the country and obtain employment without any problem. The trouble is there are too many students these days.

There's a lot of older students as well.  They figure they'll ride this out and get a degree since there aren't jobs available.  However, the situation doesn't seem to be getting better and they'll most-likely graduate with crippling student loan debt that will follow them the  rest of their lives.  It's sad... I know of several kids coming out of high school who want to go to college but can't or don't want to get in debt so they wait.  Is this going to be a lost generation?  Very few good options out there.

Unusual for engineers not to be able to find graduate level jobs?

10% isn't bad folks. Look at some of the majors that are hard to fill. They just need to hang in there and work doing "whatever" until they find an opportunity.

I think a lot of college grads just learned the hard way that a socialist can't run a capitalist nation. But, I'm sure they're still proud to say they voted for Obama. I'll bet mom & dad are just tickled pink that their 23 year-old son is back in the house playing x-box.

If we would have socialist anything the education would have been free of charge like it is overseas!

I'm really quite surprised by the Engineering graduate figures, out of all my friends who graduated last year those that did engineering were the quickest to find a graduate position and had the best starting salary.

Our community college said that in our transforming economy, it is challenging to know exactly what skills will be in demand years from now.
