LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron is cutting short an African trade tour to fly back to Britain to take control of an inquiry into the phone-hacking scandal that has led to the resignation of the country's top policeman, media reported on Monday.

The Guardian said Cameron had halved the tour's length to two days from four, and will only visit South Africa and Nigeria. Plans to visit Sudan and Rwanda have been cancelled, it said.

The prime minister will fly home on Tuesday to allow him to finalise the arrangements for Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry into the media, the newspaper said.

The Financial Times said the prime minister was returning to the Britain to fend off criticism that he was out of the country in the midst of the scandal.

It cited a source close to the prime minister as saying that the Africa trip had been shortened to enable him to focus on events closer to home.

"There are quite a few pressing things going on," the source told the FT. (Reporting by Brenda Goh; Editing by Michael Roddy)

David Cameron can't look the British public in the eyes and tell them with a straight face that he didn't dip his tail the sewage waste, can't he? Sleep with rats, you're a rat, David!

Although I understand the parlimentary system, I don't understand why Cameron's job is hanging in the balance here. Does he have a minority government?

Is the pressure getting a bit much David?

David Cameron should do the right thing by his country and stand down today. The longer he tries to hold on, the worse it will be for him.

Methinks there will be an election soon in England

Unfortunat ely, the resignatio n of the PM would not necessaril y mean an election. In this country, we elect a political party, and not a leader. The leader is chosen by the party. so don't hold your breath for any big change.

There could be elctions, there may just be a change in the Prime Minsiter.

It all depends on the Conservative Party.

They can let David Cameron carry on being Prime Minsiter, and let more and more of this scandal errupt over the next 6 months, and risk it send the Conservative Party support collapse OR

the Conservative Party may do to David Cameron what they did to Margarat Thathcher where Thatcher was overthrown while she was in Europe. When she returned London, she went to 10 Downing Street, packed her stuff and had to leave.

Its up to the conervatives to decide what they want more :

David Cameron to be PM or Tory Party being government

Uless the all great police chief was low and lastly behind it, then he wanted the problem published, and that is why she walked out.

I must ask myself why is someone spending there time wasting it on phone hacking anyway. It is truly a waste of valuble time. The efforts should be placed somewhere useful as they already are. What adisgrace the person that manged to that and get focused on by the news, then bailed out in such a short time, now anyone can tell who she is when ever you see the frame of her face. Doesn't the person get concerned of representation at all. I wouldn't have spent a second getting caught red handed. A true waste of time, even if the plan was devised by someone in higher power to call attention slim shot, but possible. Meaning l one Someone in the Royal guard handed it. More likely, somone else, then even more likely just somone whoo needs attention, and to find a way to get it from anyone, possibly even someone who wanted to bet she could? Even funnier at that. That certainly isn't top notch material, though.
