Just hours after his lawyer said that he believed his client to be insane, Anders Breivik's ex-stepmother told the Associated Press that she saw "no sign" of him being anything other than an ordinary Norwegian.

Tove Oevermo said that Breivik would often visit her and his father in France, and that she kept in touch with him even after divorcing his father, but that he had shown no indications of planning a massacre.

Breivik, who killed 76 people on Friday in Norway's largest mass murder since the Second World War, was described as being "a well behaved boy ... a happy, normal child.

"If I'd had some kind of suspicion - some kind of idea that something was not right with him, it would have been easier [to deal with], I think."

The waters around Utoya island, where Friday's massacre took place, are still being searched by police. Offices are also continuing their efforts to identify the victims.

The first names of those killed will be published online from 18:00 Norwegian time, after their families have been informed.
