World's Most Expensive White Wine Sells For £75,000

A new Guinness World Record was set today, for the most expensive bottle of white wine ever sold. The bottle of 1811 Château d'Yquem was sold by London fine and rare wine specialists, The Antique Wine Company, to the wine connoisseur and private collector Christian Vanneque for £75,000.

Vanneque does not intend to enjoy his extravagant purchase, instead it will be put on display at his new restaurant in Bali.

The 1811 Chateau d'Yquem is prized as one of the greatest wines in the history of Bordeaux and one of the most supreme vintages ever produced. It was rated the ultimate "100 points" by respected wine critic Robert Parker and again 100 points by The Wine Spectator's Per-Henrik Mansson in 1999. Before being put up for auction, the bottle was required to pass a series of rigorous checks on its authenticity, including tests on the corks, capsule, and the colour of the bottle.

But what would it actually taste like? The majority of white wines are not meant to age and will become undrinkable after only a few years.

However, the high sugar levels and natural acidity of Château d'Yquem make it one of the few exceptions to this rule. If it is stored correctly, this rare bottle could age almost indefinitely, with its quality improving over time. On the other hand, for those looking for a drink rather than an ego boost, Sainsbury are currently doing a bottle of white from their Basics range for just £2.99.

All these haters! Yes, I agree, it is a ridiculous indulgence. The money would be better spent on anything else. It is the height of decadence to pay so much money for just a bottle of wine.
And yet...the summer of 1811 is trapped in that bottle. The long ago ghosts of a forgotten year, the heat of August and the lazy drone of bees from a day long since gone are still present in the glass. Chateaux d'Yquem is the Queen of dessert wines. The subtle complexity of its flavor are the ultimate tasting experience. Will I ever be able to afford it? No. But I can envy from afar. As for some of you, I would suggest you look up "The Fox and the Grapes" in Aesop's Fables. There is a moral there just for you.

A good read on this is the book Billionaires Vinegar, talks about how its almost an open secret that a lot of this stuff is faked or not as advertised but its such an insular community that the buyers, sellers, auctioneers, etc are kind of all in it together because it keeps the circle going.

Why sometimes people are so lazy to think properly? With that amount the buyer could lunch big project in developing country and lots of people could remember and respect him for his that job.

Those people only want respect from other rich c$#k suckers which is why they have to buy bottles of wine that no one will ever drink. Helping create someting of value would never occur to such a blue blooded goblin.

sainsbury plug at the end had me in stitches. there's a classic new yorker comic where at a romantic dinner a guy pours wine to a girl out of a big carton on which it's written 'chateau de costco'.
