Dirty Dancing
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in the iconic original film Dirty Dancing (1987)

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Dirty Dancing is coming back to the big screen.

Lionsgate said it is remaking the 1987 film that starred Jennifer Grey as a naive dance student and Patrick Swayze as her teacher and lover.

The studio said High School Musical creator Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the original film, will direct the remake.

Ortega said he is eager to discover and cast "the next breakout triple-threats" to define dancing for a generation, the way Swayze did in the original Dirty Dancing.

Quick Poll

Do you think Dirty Dancing deserves a remake?

Yes - it would be great to bring it to a whole new generation with young stars in the main roles

No - it is a classic, and should be left well alone. Just go home and watch the original, and enjoy all over again.

The hollywood movie re-make syndrome is becoming tiresome. Have the film makers lost their sense of new story lines?

Just another example of the depths Hollywood has fallen over the past few decades. Ask yourself how many remakes you've seen that were half as good as the original. Surely there are a few hundred great scripts sitting on producer's desks crying out for attention but no, let's assume the audience are dummies and just throw new meat into the same grinder.

It would be a more acceptable practice (Broadway pulls it off brilliantly every few years with revivals of classic musicals) if Hollywood didn't take classics and turn them into garbage. INVASION, the Nicole Kidman remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers? Absolute garbage. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL? Possibly the worst big budget sci-fi film ever made.
I could go on and on.

Why not remake WEST SIDE STORY wih Justin Bieber and his girlfriend? Why not remake CASABLANCA with Justin Timberlake and the cast of Glee?

My favoriite classic novel is Gore Vidal's "Lincoln". I think I'll rewrite it this afternoon.

You know, if the remake sucks, the original is still awesome, so, I don't understand why anyone who liked the original (I loved it) would oppose a remake.

I just don't get that uptight over remakes. It's not like you can't still see the original. Let them try. It works or it doesn't, but the original is still there.

Let me guess, the two main characters (one gay, one straight) will meet at summer camp. While in a dance class they notice each other and start to practice together. Soon they will be involved with the whole aspect of forbidden love and resort to midnight swims and private rehearsals. Only whispers of the truth come out to the parents and during the final recital they come out. Father doesn't want to attend but during the performance he show up, stands in the corner and smiles. At the end of the dance the gay couple have a long passionate kiss while everyone applauds.
Just a guess.

It puzzles me why anyone would want to remake a cult favorite movie?? Do they just run out of good scripts or ideas for new movies? Why "Dirty Dancing", such a beloved Patrick Swayze film? Would you remake "On The Waterfront" or "Citizen Kane"...no, of course not, so why "modernize" this wonderful film to garner a new audience...it's insulting to Swayze's memory and our love for the film. Come up with a new idea!

What? There's no new ideas out there? Have to rehash old classics?
At least there would be something besides Horror genre on the video shelves...but still...

I am sick of remakes. They never compare to the originals. Original, creative story-telling is becoming a rarity in film these days.

I guarantee that this movie will suck. Though, it will pull in a few bucks. So I guess the studio wins again
