What do Nelson Mandela, Apple and The Olympics have in common? Well, according to a new poll by BritainThinks they're the top brands, events and people that define who we are today.

The polling organisation asked Britons to choose companies and international and national events to put in a timecapsule.

The results were revealing, with 19% of those surveyed saying technological brands represented them, and 12% choosing World War Two as a defining event that had impacted on their life. One tenth of respondents said 9/11 was the event that had the greatest influence on who they were – and 4% of women said it was Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

Take a look at some of the more interesting findings in the slideshow below. Read the full results here.

I happily use an Apple computer, but I can't imagine it being something which defines me in any way as anything other than a guy who uses an Apple computer. Hardly an ingredient in the essence of 'me.' The others in this list, for me at least, could be used to help define what I am not, never have been and hopefully never will be. All of them being establishment figures with no connection to 'the people,' can hardly help define those 'people,' either individually or as some form of amorphous grouping. One possible exception being Churchill, but then only for the older generation whose lives were largely forged by the events of WW2. Any individual who seriously sees their essence being represented by diana, or kate middleton windsor or her husband really do need to go out and try finding a life for themselves.
