An ambulance crew called out to a five-year-old in cardiac arrest were surprised (and a little annoyed) to discover the 'child' was actually a family cat!

The ambulance from the East of England Ambulance Service raced to the address in Hertfordshire after they received a call pleading for help resuscitating a 'five-year-old'.

Arriving at the scene the crew was shocked to find the ill 'patient' was actually a family cat, who later died.

A paramedic from the East of England Ambulance Service told the Daily Mail:

'The paramedics were probably relieved it wasn't a child to start with and then they were absolutely gobsmacked.

'It was a surreal situation. I've gone to some silly calls, but nothing like this. I can't understand why they didn't try to call a vet. Some people think 999 covers everything.'

We know we all love our pets, but isn't this madness?
