PRESS ASSOCIATION -- A 20-year-old man has been spared a jail sentence after he microwaved his pet cat, according to the RSPCA.

Stephen Stacey, of Omega Street, Portsmouth, Hampshire, was given a 16-week custodial sentence suspended for 18 months for causing unnecessary suffering to the cat, which he had named Comeonthen.

At Portsmouth Magistrates' Court, he was also banned from keeping all animals for life and was made subject to a six-week night-time curfew.

The court heard that on February 25, Stacey had considered throwing the cat out of the window but decided to put it in the microwave instead.

The cat, which survived the ordeal, has now been adopted by the RSPCA Stubbington Ark animal centre in Fareham, Hampshire, where staff have renamed it Nancy.

RSPCA inspector Micky Garrity said: "I am glad the court has recognised the serious nature of this offence and sent out a clear message that, under the Animal Welfare Act, pet owners have a duty of care to protect their animals.

"The way this poor cat was treated was appalling and I am pleased that the RSPCA can now find her a new home where she can be safe and lead a happy life free of fear."

I think it would be unfair to this nice man solely for microwaving his cat! After all, he is a human and you can't just treat crimes against animals the same as we treat crimes against humans.

No, a more humane (and less costly) treatment woud simply be to microwave the man!!

I have no words to describe my feelings about this story ! No respect for Life .
Do you think if we built a Micro Wave big enough to hold Mr. Stacey that he might get the
idea in his head that this would be a painful way to die. ???

There are no jail spaces even for murderers at the moment. I'm not surprised he's walked.

So a 17yr old is placed in custody for stealing a fizzy drink, yet this man committed dreadful animal cruelty to a cat and he walks away from prison. presumably there was no room for him.
There is a link between animal cruelty and psychopathic tendencies. This young man needs psychiiatric help before he commits even worse violence to something or someone.

I agree. If he can't be sectioned as mentally ill because he isn't, then he should be jailed for sadism.

When humans perish from this planet after ruining it I can see it now. Animals dancing everywhere. I love this line so much I wanted to repeat it, Why spare this guy, there is obviously a screw loose here maybe more than one possibly a few in the justice system, inhumanity why should we tolerate it; it spreads like a virus. CRUELTY IS A CRIME OF POWER.

It escalates, from animals to babies and children to girlfriends/wives and pregnant women to elderly/vulnerable persons.

There are no interventions/therapy which have been statistically shown to deter offenders from repeating and accelerating this behavior.  Suspended sentences, lifetime bans, curfews are all equally ineffective.  Serial killers often show animal cruelty as children, 'learning' what brings them the most pleasure and how to reduce the risk of being caught.

Stacey's lifetime ban won't last.  He's unemployed, living with 17yo girlfriend Jade who has subsequently become pregnant,  Undoubtedly Jade's or the child's 'right to a family life' will supersede the ban to allow a pet in the household.

The cat's crime was scratching Stacey:  Jade didn't report it, she went to a neighbor who removed the cat from the oven, took it to his place and called RSPCA.  The cat had eye and brain damage due to 'cooking,' and was still giving off heat the next day.  Stacey's defense was that he was drunk and arguing with his pregnant girlfriend.  His barrister said:

[Stacey] wanted to move away from the bad influences in his life and has stopped drinking.  His girlfriend is doing that with him and she is three months pregnant. He is facing this with great trepidation as she is only 17.  This is his chance to set up a family and he wants to be with her during the early months of pregnancy and there until when the child arrives in this world.'  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2027821/Cat-survives-cooked-microwave-thug-Stephen-Stacey.html#ixzz1VVELANPD

In court, I've seen a number of microwaved-baby cases and judges allowing defendants to return to those homes.  In the last one I saw, it was the meth-and-cocaine-addicted defendant's first violent offense (had prior drug offenses), his pastor said he had reformed, his mother said he was a good man who loved his infant (it survived with permanent injuries), and his wife (who was the only one working) asked the court to give him probation because she needed him to babysit the infant.  That judge sent him to prison for a year minimum, and made his subsequent living/custody arrangements subject to court approval.

I have no doubt that Stacey will discipline that new baby in a similar fashion.  If I were Jade's parent, I'd have a barrister looking at ways to prevent Stacey from ever being alone with that child.

I was a corporate trial lawyer, spent 30 years in courtrooms much of it waiting through criminal dockets.  My pro bono was for an animal shelter (20 years financial and legal work), and advocacy/trial work for abused children, animals and women.

Most likely Stacey will escalate, and abuse his girlfriend while pregnant and later the baby.  Microwaving a cat is just so warped that further abuse isn't a possibility, it's a statistical certainty.  If Jade didn't protect her cat, she won't protect her baby; she's taken the role of victim (no responsibility, lots of sympathy.) That's the way it works.

This got personal as well. I have a goddaughter Ashley, (awol dad; I'm widowed no children), and since she was 5 I was 'Dad'; she called me daily (boys, friends, and schoolwork; she couldn't talk to her mom.)  But when she had serious abuse issues with her Mom, I stood up for her and won (her mom is very unstable.)  Now she's in 2nd yr college (engineering) doing well, calls me several times a week (still boyfriends, schoolwork) and see her on every holiday/summer (her grandparents and I have a good relationship; they're welcome here, I'm welcome there.)  I was all set to hate her boyfriends but they're all really nice guys.  She's going for a PE but wants to follow up with law school;  I don't like lawyers and I don't think she will, so she's agreed to work in the field first.  PEs make more money and have more fun (my dad and spouse were both engineers, so maybe I'm biased.)  She's growing up nicely, smart, intuitive, and amazingly doesn't rush into sex or relationships. She told my father she could take her time because Dad loves her unconditionally and it's funny watching me try not to be overprotective.  My dad loved Ashley, but I now understand what he meant when he said I'd love being her father but it was gonna kill me in the end.

There is a huge gap in the Mental Health Act for treatment of psychopathic/sociopathic disorders.
. Even though there was incontrovertable evidence that showed how a person is "formed" from birth to become psychopathic, Psychiatrist were very reluctant about including it in the act because they knew there were not nearly enough treatment centres for them. Additionally & sadly, outcomes for psychopaths are very poor indeed and their behaviour becomes more ingrained as they grow from childhood to adulthood and is largely irreversible
This young man needs help and soon.

I think the lad needs psychiatric help, isn't this kind of behavior a precursor to serial killing?
