PRESS ASSOCIATION -- A Red Arrows pilot died when his plane crashed following an air show, a Ministry of Defence spokesman has said.

Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging's Hawk T1 aircraft plunged to the ground near Bournemouth Airport in Dorset at 1.50pm.

Eyewitnesses saw the plane flying low before smashing into a field and coming to a standstill with its nose in the River Stour near the village of Throop.

Dorset Police said the pilot had been thrown from the aircraft and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An MoD spokesman said: "A full service inquiry into the details of the crash has been initiated. It would be inappropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident at this time."

Nicholas Gore, 22, from Throop, was walking with a friend close to the river when he saw all nine Red Arrows overhead following the display over the seafront at the Bournemouth Air Festival.

"There were quite a few people watching and we saw them go over but one seemed quite low," he said. "They then disappeared behind trees and I heard a crack - not an explosion - just a crack and we got further down and I saw the plane with its red tail in the air and its nose in the river."

Group Captain Simon Blake, the Commandant of the RAF's Central Flying School, described the 33-year-old pilot from Rutland as "a true team player".

He said: "Flt Lt Jon Egging, known as Eggman, joined the team as Red 4 in the autumn of 2010.

"A gifted aviator, he was chosen to fly in the Red 4 slot, on the right hand outside of the famous diamond nine formation - an accolade in itself being the most demanding position allocated to a first year pilot. Throughout his winter training and the display season to date, his professionalism, skill and humility have shone through."

"Thrown from the aircraft" is a statement that makes absolutely no sense, this is a Hawk T1, not a 1956 Chevy, the pilot is secured to the ejection seat, and the ejection seat is secured to the aircraft. However - there are several cases of bang seats firing when subjected to a severe impact with the ground. Right now my guess is that he rode this aircraft down into that field and the impact fired his seat which then failed to fully deploy for some reason (they are zero zero capable), leaving him with a short and sadly fatal ride into the ground.

Sure it's wild speculation, but I have a feeling I may be correct, let's see.

How many of us can say we died doing what we truly lived and breathed and loved more than anything else in the world?

If you are unable to tolerate a diversity of opinion however distasteful it may be to you or to some of your readers, you should turn away unless it involves profanity and defamation.

Otherwise Huffington Post your conduct in censoring those who have adifferent view to you or selected readers is little different to that of the Taleban, Ghadaffi and the Iranian clergy against who you carry paid propaganda here.

Removing a post is one way to express your intolerance. But your banning a person from expressing his right to post is a naked breach of the right to free speech. Not all who post here are hicks. If you continue with your actions in this regard without first affording the writer the right to defend himself against your allegation or those of your readers against him, then let me be the first (part of a group) to initiate legal proceedings against your publication.

Where diversity of opinion and thought is suppressed then you get the mindset that has brought the US to its knees which ought to be discouraged vigorously.

"right to free speech."

The right to speak freely is a right that a government cannot take away. And has nothing at all to do with what can be said in a privately owned forum. Failure to see this distinction is a mistake that Palin commonly makes when she criticizes the media and accuses them of violating her right to free speech. Briefly to reiterate perhaps more clearly still. The right to free speech is a right that the government cannot breach.

HP owns this website. It is not a public square. When you submit your post HP becomes the owner of the words. HP can be held liable in court for what people say here. That is what gives them the right to do what they want with their property.

If you do not like it you need not stay.

submitted a post almost identical that never showed up. Maybe it was a bit too agressive in suggesting that the poster had no clue what the freedom of speech meant. I agree with you.

No this is a public forum owned by private interests (even that point is debateable) in a public space. The internet is public space governed by laws of each country from where the information or the forum or publisher is domiciled or where the article or publication originates. (Gutnik vs Harpers Magazine (Vic Supreme court Australia).

The insult that I ought to go away if I do not agree is not only ridiculous but an adornment of the stupidity of your comments Waldopepper. This being an American publication, regardless of whether it uses the services of a third party server in a third party country over which the US has no jurisdiction is governed by US Federal laws.

If their publication is private then it ought not to be in public space even if it pays for the conveyance on the internet.

Critically, HP invites comments on its blog. It restricts those rights when it decides these comments do not conform to their subjective views of whats good bad or ugly. If this were a blog or publication accessible through a restricted gateway such as through membership only or some other form which is restricted, the private defence would be understandable.

It is important that we all and collectively resist the idea that propaganda and private morality belongs in a public space. If not then I am perfectly capable of using the same internet and the millions of other portals to campaign against such bullying. It is cyber bullying.

Sad, we just got back from the Chicago Air and Water show. My daughter was thrilled. These pilots are so skilled you forget about the risk until they do the 'Missing Man' formation.

Saw the Red Arrows perform many times while I was stationed in England. Awesome skills. Very sad to hear they lost one of their own. All my very best wished to the family, friends and to the RAF. You all lost something wonderful.

I am sure he was attempting to ditch the air craft in a safe area but I am not sure why he remained with the craft as it crashed. I am more than eager to hear the results of the investigation. The pilots are able to talk to each other, plus the Black Box can be revealing.

Even if Huffington Post doesn't follow up I will be looking for the results elsewhere.

I honor these pilots and their gift.

What a waste of life and resources and taxpayers money. My best to his family. War and it's toys are nothing but waste.

No one likes wars, but why do you suppose you are free? No accident.

Yeah. fighting the British was not a mistaken war, but what about the rest?

The red arrows team is airobatic team. Iv seen them at loads of events. They are great and demonstrate the fantiastic skills and awesome nature of jet flight. No war, no weapons. Pretty things are always considered a waste by those with no appreciation of their beauty.
