Doctor Who Star Matt Smith To Play Rowing Star In BBC Olympic Drama

Matt Smith Swaps Tardis For Chariot In Olympic Drama

From time travelling Doctor to Olympic rower - actor Matt Smith is doing his bit for London 2012, taking the lead role in an Olympic drama.

Smith is best known for battling aliens in Doctor Who, but now - after plenty of hours in the gym - he's set to play rowing star Bert Bushnell.

Filming for the one-off BBC show, titled Bert And Dickie, which tells the tale of two British Olympic champs, started this month.

The BBC programme synopsis reads:

"Just six weeks before the final of the 1948 London Olympics, Bert Bushnell and Dickie Burnell are teamed together to race for Olympic gold in the double sculls.

This is the uplifting story of their achievement and how London managed to pull off a brilliant, if make do and mend Olympic Games at a challenging time for the city and the nation."

Bert And Dickie will air next year, as London prepares to host its own one-off event.
