Freida Pinto burst into cinema-goers' consciousness two and a half years ago when she played Dev Patel's sweet love interest in the acclaimed indie-secret turned global phenomenon, Slumdog Millionaire.

Since her big break, she's been directed by Woody Allen (You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger) and starred in a big-budget, effects-driven Hollywood movie, (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

This month sees her appear in her first Indian film since Slumdog - Michael Winterbottom’s Trishna.

Trishna is based on the novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and sees Pinto playing a young woman seduced by the wealthy son of a property developer.

Winterbottom is celebrated for casting his unforgiving eye and bleak comedic spin on what, in other directors' hands, could pass for a sentimental tale - so we can only guess what he'll do with this 19th century tale.

The film premieres at the Toronto Film Festival next month, but a teaser trailer starring Pinto in a romantic leading role has just been released.
