PHOTOS: Libyan Rebels Tour The Gaddafi Family Lifestyle

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 27/08/11 14:30   Updated: 27/10/11 11:12

Rebels who have captured the houses of Colonel Gaddafi's daughter Aisha Gaddafi and his son Hannibal Gaddafi took media photographers on a 'tour' of what they found inside on Friday.

Among the interesting finds were bottles of expensive champagne - despite the fact that alcohol was banned under Gaddafi's regime.

The rebels also found gaudy sofas, giant paintings of sports cars and, in one case, a giant golden mermaid.

Take a look at some of the most interesting photos below.

An exspensive life style I am not particularly surprised about. And Libya is a rich country. With foreign sanctioned assests alone of about $170 Billion and a population of 6 Million, thats about $$28,000+ per capita. A long way ahead of the US $123,000 per family national debt in the USA.
But their hypocracy shows with all their liquor. Haram!

Man! I would love to have that golden mermaid couch. I think it is absolutely fabulous. I'd put that sucker right in my living room. Oh yeah baby!

There must be nothing cooler than a common soldier hanging out in the decadent home of the dictator they have just overthrown. Love the picture of the guy wearing qaddafi's robe.

What is a "rest house?" Are they dotted 100 yards apart for Gaddafi's tired son?

I just hope those rebels know how to put some of those spirits to good use. I know alcohol was banned under Gadhafi but this is just like that scene out of Band of Brothers when they find (I want to say) Goebbels personal wine cellar. There was a photo I noticed last week of a bunch of rebels looking at bottles of Cristal not knowing what it really was or how much it was worth, let alone that it was Gadhafi's Cristal. In some way, I hope they preserve these places to remind anyone what Gadhafi was but if they want to burn them down I wouldn't blame them either.

The most ominous and gaudy building I've ever been in the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. I wouldn't doubt there are going to be places far more spectacular than what we see in the photos. The only rebels I'm envious of are the first one's who came upon Gadhafi's collection of cars, looked at each other, said "are you thinking what I'm thinking", then were seen driving around yelling WOOT!

These boys just toppled their dictator. Regardless of religious belief or law, I say "get crunk".

Looks like the dear leader was busy living it up, downing champers like no man's business, while the rest of the great unwashed masses have to make do with water.

cheap indeed. "Buckingham and white house" have been around for over a thousand years and over 200 years respectively, while Gaddafi's palace coup is 40 years and one single family old. It is a typical tyranny, while the former two are established power structures.

Ghadafi was a real Robbing HOOD, stealing from the poor and giving to the rich, meaning himself and his family. This is what these criminal dictators do. They should all be shot.

Are we supposed to be impressed by THIS "display of wealth"??? This isn't even as grand as a lot of celebrity homes in Los Angeles. Certainly nowhere near as grand as the wealthy elite in Europe. I'd say he was living pretty modestly considering his important position and how long he's had to accumulate wealth. I was expecting to see something like one of the former Russian Czar's palaces with gold and rubies in the walls, hand carved elaborate furniture and original paintings from masters hundreds of years old. This place is a joke compared to that kind of REAL wealth.
03:43 on 31/08/2011
Yup!!! See they did have a lot of money. But they were really really tacky people. Just tacky of all tackyness possible.
21:26 on 01/09/2011
It's just one of the houses. We cannot infer from just these pictures that Gaddhafi lived modestly. Remember, this is just one REST house. A crib; or a shack to pass one night a year in if you will... I bet there's a lot more wealth beneath it all. We should really start thinking about curbing our oil consumption.

Looks like a Progressive Dream ... dictators and elites live like kings while the plebes are all "equal" at a low poverty level ...

I'm sure the disparity between Buckingham Palace and the minimum wage earning Brits is by far greater.

Maybe we need to send Drones to bomb the Queens Palace?

Think before you type homey. The English Monarchy has been around for hundreds of years, before your country even existed.
