William Hague Looks For Justice From Libya

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- William Hague has played down suggestions that the new Libyan government will block fresh efforts to secure justice for the Lockerbie bombing and Yvonne Fletcher murder.

The Foreign Secretary said the leader of the National Transitional Council (NTC) had pledged to "cooperate fully" with the British authorities.

Hopes have been raised in the case of WPC Fletcher - who was shot while policing a protest outside the Libyan embassy in 1984 - after junior diplomat Abdulmagid Salah Ameri was named as the prime suspect.

However, the Sunday Times reported that NTC member Hassan al-Sagheer had dismissed the prospect of a British trial being held.

He also apparently rejected the idea that the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, could be returned to prison in the UK.

"Libya has never extradited or handed over its citizens to a foreign country," Mr Ameri said. "We shall continue with this principle."

Speaking in a round of broadcast interviews this morning, Mr Hague said: "This is an ongoing police investigation so it is quite difficult for me to comment.

"I would say that when chairman (Mustafa Abdel) Jalil, the chairman of the National Transitional Council, was with us in London in May he committed himself and the council to co-operating fully with the British government on this issue.

"It is true, it is a fact, that there is no extradition treaty with Libya. but we look to them to cooperate fully.

"So I would not take what has been written in the press today as the last word."

This looks to me like Hague is grandstanding for 15 minutes of the news cycle, exactly like the US Senators who have been calling for Megrahi's extradition to the US.

They KNOW that Megrahi won't be extradited, they know there's no legal basis for such an extradition and the US long ago relinquished any legal claim against Megrahi... but it gets covered by the media, it looks good for the voters.

Such comfort to know that Hague indulges in the exact same thing.

Not bad for someone who lost his party a General Election. Usually they sink into the back benches but somehow he slimed his way back into the cabinet.

Didnt much like him then and like him even less now

I don't remember any reason for NATO intervention in Lybia other than preventing Gaddafi going from house to house door to door to kill every Lybian who might be a possible rebel.(I personally think that was bull-poop propaganda) So now we want to impose our will on the new government? As repulsive as Megrahi's actions were, as the new government of Lybia I would not give up a citizen just because some body who led from behind wanted me to.

William Hague has no say whatsoever in decisions made by the Scottish criminal justice system, but like many "UK" politicians he has the arrogance to think he can dictate to the duly elected Scottish government. The decision to release Megrahi was taken in good faith, was transparent and lawful. Unlike the parts played in the whole sorry farrago by the UK and US governments.

Leave it alone, Mr Hague, it's none of your business.

Let him talk. The more he appears to disrespect the Scots and out legal system the greater the calls for independence from England will get and then we won't have Tory governments foisted on us against our will

100% agreed. It burns my gut to hear them spew their bile and nonsens, but the long term result will be worth the price of all the Gaviscon.

I really do hope that you're right! For me, Westminster is already an irrelevance in so many ways and often when I hear them make their pronouncements they seem as if they're speaking about a foreign country already. I think the riots down in England also highlighted just how foreign a place it is.

William Haigue is right to seek justice for Lybia, but it is up to the Lybian Transcision Council to enforce justice for all, there must be no revenge, all must be treated fairly and equally.

Bit late looking elsewhere for justice now I would have thought, the time for that was when it happened, when these supposed "diplomats" were walking away from the scene of a murder while claiming immunity, as usual, spout a load of garbage and some thicko will believe it. Anyone else heard a politician tell the truth, no, well its not going to start with this man and I'd really like to see the team from the met who are engaged in this investigation, the Scotland yard cat is on its own again.

Amazing maybe now we will be able to get some of the guys who actually did it and failing that the rebels are probably going to have Gadaffis head on a stick anyway so its a win win scenario.

Well he won't find it there!

The whole country has become fat and bloated and the Lockerbie, Yvonne Fletcher cases have been so distorted by the media and politicans that I doubt anyone can remember the real truth.
