PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Fantasy hit The Lord of the Rings has retained its position as the nation's favourite film theme tune.

It held off challenges from Gladiator and a surge of interest in the work of late composer John Barry, who died earlier this year.

The Lord Of The Rings, with a score composed by Howard Shore, topped the poll organised by Classic FM. It also led the field last year in the annual Movie Music Chart poll.

Barry featured in top 100 four times and had two entries in the top five - Out of Africa was at three and Dances with Wolves at five, with both of them climbing from their 2010 positions.

Quick Poll

Here are the top 5 film theme tunes, what's your favourite?

John Barry – Dances With Wolves

John Williams – Schindler’s List

John Barry – Out Of Africa

Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard – Gladiator

Howard Shore – The Lord Of The Rings

Hans Zimmer's Oscar-nominated Gladiator score was runner-up in the list.

John Williams had the most entries with 11 film themes in the top 100, including Schindler's List and Star Wars.

Classic FM presenter John Suchet said: "Were Mozart and Beethoven alive today, they'd surely be composing film scores - the popularity of movie music with audiences across the UK confirms that today's classical music is as enduring as ever."

Hands down - John Williams' Theme from Star Wars...

Used to have the soundtrack way back when. Played it to death.

The Perfect Storm had a really great score. I go with LOTR myself. Can't figure out how Crouching Tiger beat Gladiator for the Oscar that year. There's nothing memorable from Tiger.

I couldn't even remember the theme. Whack. Schindler's list for the win.

I didn't see Cocoon on the list. Still one of my favorites.
Star Trek 2 is also a great score.

Again, a poll that was obviously created by young people who know little if nothing about the great film scores of old. My vote? Probably a toss up between "How The West Was Won" and "The "Ten Commandments". Others that should have been mentioned: "Gone With The Wind", "Casablanca", "Now, Voyager", "Star Wars", "Somewhere In Time", "Lawrence of Arabia" and the original "Conan The Barbarian". But if I had to choose from this meagre selection, "LOTR" would win hands down.

I adore John Barry, so it is a hard decision, but the Lord of the Ring's score, taken over the course of the 3 movies, is a true achievement in film scores, so I'd have to go with that.

"Jurassic Park" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" also have excellent scores. However, the theme from "The Lord of the Rings" movies is my favorite.
