Protesters Burn American Flag Outside US Embassy In London

Flag Burning

First Posted: 11/09/11 15:17 Updated: 11/11/11 10:12

Protesters outside the US Embassy in London have burnt an American flag during the one minutes silence held to mark the ten year anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

According to the BBC around 60 Muslim demonstrators gathered outside the embassy in Grosvenor Square, Central London, on Sunday afternoon and shouted slogans including "Obama, Obama, terrorist" and "Muslims will conquer the White House".

The protesters also carried placards carrying anti-American messages including one that read "'our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hellfire.'

Several of the protesters are said to be from Muslims Against Crusades (MAC), who warned ahead of time they planned to disrupt the service.

Cleric Anjem Choudary from the group said: "We will be very noisy during that time. It will be to expose the crimes of the American government over the past ten years and showing how they have failed.

He added: ‘We are going to be asking were the 19 [hijackers] martyrs? Were the 3,000 [people killed] innocent?’

Members of the group also burned a poppies on Armistice Day.

But the Daily Telegraph reported that a counter-demonstration held by Muslims was staged to rebut the MAC.

One man who had travelled to London to oppose the MAC said: "I'm a Muslim. What they're doing is bringing shame on all Muslims. This is not part of the teachings of Islam.

Another demonstration held by some members of the the right-wing English Defence League also took place.

On Sunday morning the families of some of the 67 British victims of the September 11 attacks attended a ceremony at the Grosvenor Chapel near the embassy.

It means they aren't out killing someone at that particular time.

It is actions like these that cause so much islamaphobia in the world and why people view all muslims at radical terrorists.

What I see from this is just a bunch of fools crying out for attention.

The only positive aspect of this was the small group of Muslims opposed to the MAC group.

And while they may say this isn't what Islam is about, as long as any religion has holy writ that exorts its flock to violence against non believers there will be some practitioners who take those words as a call to arms and license to kill.

What Islam in the West needs is religious leaders to refute Koranic passages that call for death to the Infidels. But, this may not happen since the Koran is absolute and any cleric who would dare refute its words may put himself danger.

I like to post this link to Hunter S. Thompson's September 12, 2001 column. Other than not knowing the final casualty total, The good doctor predicted the last ten years the very next day.

That seems to be a bit of a buried lead... There was a demonstration by the EDL?

Was it a counter-demonstration in response to the "Muslims Against Crusades?"

Or were members of the EDL protesting against the US?

Partially they are right. Everyone speaks about the 3000 dead of the WTC attack but no one even dares to speak about the thousands of dead in Afghanistan or Iraq. And they have all the right to protest as along as the US government invaded their countries after blaming them for the fall of the WTC which we have to be completely ignorant to not know was done by the US. Let's face it people, when you want something you can easily make it as if you are defending yourself which is the US's way ever since the early 1900s.

yurimintskovsky: Afghanistan and Iraq asked for American HELP. America DID NOT WANT to go to those countries and DIE and FIGHT for those people! Our Military and our Government is only one of many countries who have signed an HONOR bound agreement to stand by and help one another when called upon to do so. I am sure that honor or keeping your word, or doing your duty, even when it is useless is not something you would understand at all. Americans do not WANT to be in those countries but they do their duty, even when they receive ingratitude for putting their lives on the line. Seems to me that all the Muslims and Islamics do is rage, protest, destroy, resent, envy, and hope to punish others if they do not get their way. Go fix your own before you judge others.

I think you should have every right to burn the American flag, protest America on the 10th anniversary of 9-11, even laud the terrorists as heroes. Similarly, you should also have the right to be beaten to death publicly by a group of firefighters from Lower Manhattan... I've read many of the posts on here today - just want to say thank you, UK. Granted, in hindsight, the wars were probably not the best idea that we ever came up with, but you backed us, and Americans don't forget that kind of thing.

Yes, historically the Americans are very generous to their allies, aren't they? No offence, my friend, but your country is famous for serving itself and short-changing those it calls friends.

If the USA was down the pub it would be constantly being called home for a 'family emergency' just as it was its turn to buy the next round...

Yes, we Americans are so terrible... how does the rest of the world co-exist with us? We give substantially more to the UN than any other country. We donate more relief aid than any other country. I don't know how others put up with us.

are you guys seriously posting this as "Muslim demonstrators"

LOL REALLY?

this is a well known group of tools that is IDENTICAL to the westboro baptist church, in that they PLAN THESE THINGS OUT, for MEDIA ATTENTION (LIKE YOURS), hoping to get branded as "Muslims"

STOP, feeding into this.

I have to say I agree, the label is not helpful. Having said that, if they identify as Muslim then they have as much right as any other individual to be called as such.

Someone should point out to them that what the burn is not actually an American flag. No points for effort.

That, genius, is not a flag. It is a poster that has printing on one side. So if you want to get all upset and bothered because some people you don't know burned a poster with a picture of a flag on it, in a country you will probably never go to, have at it. But be honest about it. That is not an American flag. Having grown up on a military base, as well as worked in that particular embassy, I can tell the difference. I am sure if they had tried a little harder they could have come up with an actual flag. No points for effort to them, or for you either since you don't know the difference.

It's good to see some pluralism in Islam

What can one do? This is solid proof that there is no accounting for taste. Nor for the lack of a bottom to what a low consciousness is capable. Here, in the US, we have characters like that Goofy Pastor (?) in Florida who bar be cues The Koran. And the church members who travels 100's of miles to protest at funerals because the US is backsliding/progressive with gayrights.
( I should research and cite their proper names. Yet, they, like the firebugs in the above article, are not worth the effort.)
I hope that these flag burners were aware that their images were captured and documented and shared by a range of security organizations. They should never be ashamed to speak up and be heard. If only the puppet masters would have your courage.
