PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Andy Whitfield, the Welsh-born 39-year-old star of the cable series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died.

Manager Sam Maydew said Whitfield died of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sydney, Australia.

Whitfield's wife Vashti in a statement called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife".

Whitfield, who was born in Amlwch, Anglesey and lived in Australia, was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the title hero in Spartacus, a hit original series for the Starz network that made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality.

Whitfield was preparing for the second season when he was diagnosed 18 months ago.

In January the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role.

I feel really sad about Andy Whitfield. I was hoping he was going to make a full recovery and i was looking forward to the next series . Alas it wasnt meant to be. I thought he was great in Spartacus and even though he was brutalised he managed to give the him some humanity and caring against all odds RIP

His death is on some level more heartfelt and ironic given his on screen persona. But that perhaps is the pathos of being an entertainer, that the roles we excel in on the big screen are sometimes not the roles we can become as much as we will it in reality, but then again such things as cancer know no rhyme or reason, which is why Andy Whitfield’s death is perhaps even more startling given the legacy and aura that he commanded on screen and of course off screen, and perhaps even more so now….
