Nick Clegg Admits Joining Euro Would Have Been A 'Huge Error'

Joining the euro would have been a "huge, huge error", Nick Clegg has admitted.

The Deputy Prime Minister, previously a strong advocate of single currency membership, said that, in "hindsight", Britain had had a lucky escape.

However, he insisted no-one could have predicted the problems which have emerged, and blamed the Germans and French for wrecking the project.

The Liberal Democrat leader was asked about his views on the euro in a round of broadcast interviews at the party's conference in Birmingham. "I think, clearly, with the benefit of hindsight, you can say it would have been a huge, huge error," Mr Clegg replied.

"I don't think anyone could have predicted at the time the euro was created that the rules which were supposed to be in place to ensure that everybody looked after their own financial affairs properly would be so spectacularly ignored and broken.

"I think history will judge the then French and German governments very, very unkindly who, some years ago, basically signalled that the rules could be relaxed because that then sent a signal out to everybody else - oh well, we don't need to keep our house in order. Now I think we are dealing with the consequences."

Mr Clegg said it was very unlikely that Britain would join the euro while he was Lib Dem leader.

"I doubt very, very much that, during my political lifetime, certainly as leader of the Liberal Democrats, that we will see the UK enter into the euro," he said.

Senior Lib Dem Sir Menzies Campbell later claimed that the party's stance on the euro was "right at the time".

He told BBC News: "I don't think the problem was in the scheme of the European single currency - the problem was enforcement. People assumed, including myself, that countries that signed up to it would meet their obligations under the scheme and palpably they have not."

If the Euro fails, let's hope the EU goes away along with it. The EU needs to be replaced by E.F.T.A. We do not need a United States of Europe!

As an African, Britain is my adopted home, my allegiance is to Queen and Country, this position is unequivocal. I am a 'hand to heart man' when I hear God save our Gracious Queen and subscribe to all things British - my brother right or wrong type of patriotism. I can understand why Cameron or Clegg will not dare allow the British public to vote in a referendum. There is a high number of silent anti EU front in the indigenous population, who are fed up to the back teeth and want out, followed by a bulwark of anglophiles who cannot comprehend this european gestalt coming from some British politicians. The believe that a United States of Europe could be created from a continent with disparate cultures and centuries of historical vested interests, is naive at best and grossly stupid at worst.

The Dream ain't dead yet!

Cameron and Clegg were thinking of the rewards from bringing UK into the 'consolidated economic government' or the €zone,  as 'saviors.'  Those pesky riots unnerved the Better Classes, and the economic stats illustrate that the UK income disparity is equivalent to the 'happy times' before the Great Depression; they're as bad as Russia in 1917 or the Arab Spring countries. UK pols should either be switching teams or trying to figure a way out before the country explodes.  Nicky's probably moving to Ashton's cushy job;  I find this intelligent on his part but deeply disturbing, a rat who helped fan the flames is jumping from a burning ship.

As for Cameron, he shows no signs of changing his endgame.  He's not interested in restoring UK sovereignty; the EU Coast Guard is moving quietly ahead in Parliament, HS2's EU financing/accounting requirements are ignored; and he's receiving the noble and learned counsel of Bliar.

The Euro is still alive!  Run for your lives!

Thank heavens!  I'm nostalgic for the ideal of Marianne on the Franc.   (I also have a lot in my desk drawer.)  The € coins are pretty but, like the EU, uninspiring.  I'm faving you for your loyalty, Pcunit2009!

of course joining the euro would be a mistake
look, we have our own budget busting policies in order to balance the books and, by not joining the eurozone, we do not need to bang our heads on how to bail out southern europe (as the political crises experienced by France and Germany now).
We got lucky to not joining the euro but we are not immune to the fate of the euro in europe... but, yeah, it is fortunate that the uk did not join the eurozone.
