Featherless Baby Penguin Abandoned By Parents (Pictures)

First Posted: 21/09/11 14:15   Updated: 21/09/11 17:25

A featherless baby penguin that was rejected by its parents and left on the icy ground to die has been nursed back to health by keepers.

Abused and ignored by its parents soon after it was born on 17th August, keepers at LHT Pole Aquarium in China's Liaoning Province decided that its bald body was due to a lack of nutrients and an inability to digest food properly.

Rallying together, the aquarium set up a round-the-clock penguin support group to hand feed the baby penguin back to health. After a month, the chick flourished and even grew feathers.

Looking more like a penguin ‘should’, the baby was welcomed back to his family.

Spokeswoman Wang Dan said: "In the beginning we tried to send it back to its parents, hoping they would still take care of it and help it grow stronger, but they neglected it and even kicked it out. We then decided to feed it by ourselves".

"Where is PETA?"

Dunno, but not in China! There it probably means "People Eating Tasty Animals"!

Poor thing looks sooo pitiful in the first photo. You can almost hear the sad violin music playing in the background. Hope he grows up to be King Penguin!

I'm so glad there was that 2nd photo of the little guy looking so happy. That sad, featherless one was a heartbreaker.

LOL! You are bad.

As sad as it is, the parents of this little guy are programmed to do such a thing. If a baby is born that is not prepared to live in the wild, the parents will often leave it to die. It doesn't make sense to us, but the sole purpose of animals procreating is to continue their species. This kind of thing happens often in the wild, but I'm glad this story has a happy ending.

"Just as the mother and father penguin reject their offspring, so must YOU with Mutual of Omaha."

Always liked Marlon Perkins' way of tying in the episode's theme with insurance.

The parents were Teabaggers whose moral guidance was provided by "Atlas Shrugged."

now why would you feel the need to post something like this, huffpo? this is one of the few instances where I think we would have been better off NOT knowing this.

whoops, guess I should have clicked through to see there was a positive outcome to this before responding
