Michael Faherty, Irish Pensioner, Dies Of Spontaneous Combustion (VIDEO)

A man who died near a fire had "spontaneously combusted", a coroner in Ireland has ruled.

Michael Faherty, a 76-year-old pensioner in Galway, died at his house three days before Christmas last year in circumstances that had baffled investigators, the Irish Times reported.

Forensic experts said the death had not been caused by a fire in Faherty's fireplace, and that no accelerant had been found, nor was there evidence of foul play.

Faherty had been found lying on his back with his head near the fireplace, in the sitting room, but fire fighters said the blaze had not spread from the hearth.

Coroner Ciaran McLoughlin, who researched the matter heavily before giving his verdict, said he had never encountered such a case in his 25 years working in the region.

He said a book on forensic pathology noted that such reported cases were almost always near an open fireplace or chimney.

"This fire was thoroughly investigated and I'm left with the conclusion that this fits into the category of spontaneous human combustion, for which there is no adequate explanation," the BBC reported him as saying.

My mother was witness to a case of spontaneous combustion in the late 20's. It must have been horrifying.

Believing in God is a lot easier than believing in spontaneous combustion of anything other than perhaps red phosphorus or nitrogen iodide.

The human body is mostly water. Water does not burn. Not only that, but it takes an enormous about of energy to convert water to steam, and until you boil off the water, the flesh cannot go above the boiling point of water.

My guess is that it was an ethanol fire.

The Irish are composed of 72% alcohol

my grandfather mentioned something about people dyin by spontaneous combustion when i was a kid - that was some 40 years ago - i wonder if the guy was usin oxygen - or when my grandmother died 4 years ago the death report did state that she had holes in her lg intestines - maybe the gas yur body produces could eventually blow when yur near a fire - it certainly is odd

With all due respect for the ones that study SHC professionally, I can't help but think
the "fire" is ignited within the body and works its way out. This explains why other
items like chairs, beds, etc. don't get scortched. The outer shell of the body and the
fluids in the skin etc. act as an insulator so the fire does not spread out further. It
also seems like the SHC cases happen near a heat source. The person probably
ingested something that became volatile once inside the body. Medications, Alcohol???

There is a possible explaination. It would not be uncommon to find and elderly individual with less than quality personal hygene. Clothing heavily soiled in human body oils can ignite with the smallest spark. I witnessed this in a HS welding class where a classmate, who was not welding, ignited when a single spark landed on his badly soiled tshirt. Not to worry and years later I saw him and he had found disco and Travolta, it was bright white suits all the way.

Michael Faherty, a 76-year-old pensioner. Does this mean that here, in the U.S. the headline would read, John Doe, a 76-year-old social security receipient.......
12:07 AM on 09/25/2011
NO -- because here in the U.S. pensioners can't afford to fuel their fireplaces to start with....

In the UK everybody over a certain age, currently 65, is entitled to a state funded pension. Some may also have their private pensions, in which case they will have an income from their private annuity and their state pension. Anybody who has reached state pension age and is no longer employed is referred to as a 'pensioner' irrespective of wealth. That retirement age will be rising sharply in the future.

I heard of this before.....in tabloids. You have to take these things with a grain of salt. And since this story originated in Ireland, take it as salty blarney.

search wikipedia for spontaneous human combustion. It cites names and years and several theories of why it happens.

There was a case of a man, in 1977 or 78 in the Bronx that lived in apartment building, the neighbors complained of smokey/dead animal smell. They reported for 3 days and finally a police officer broke the door down in the living looking out the front window was a man or was left of a man who had burned. His legs from a couple inches below his knees down to his toes were fine, in fact he still had socks and slippers on and either his left or right arm was holding the arm of the chair and it was was fine from below his elbow to his fingers. The rest of him was burnt and I mean burnt!
They ruled this as :unexplained death/murder/suicide. This was one of the weirest things I ever saw as a police officer. I wish I had taken pics of it.

Spontaneous Combustion has always puzzled me. My guess is he had volatile or combustible chemicals in his body.

maybe he was facing with his back to the open hearth when he busted loose with an gaseous emission from his cabbage from dinner...??

Aye, what ancient Gods did he transgress? What blasphemous rites did he fail to complete to bring down the flame of consumption upon him? God pity him, if there be any pity for one who calls upon the Old Ones to return in all their monsterous, pre-human glory!
