Scottish Government Wants 'Dot Scot' Domain Name Independence

The Scottish Government has asked UK communications minister Ed Vaizey to back a bid to create a distinct "dotSCOT" internet identity.

Alex Neil, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment has written to Mr Vaizey asking him to back the not-for-profit company Dot Scot Registry (DSR).

Under the company`s plans, Scottish websites could have the suffix ".scot" at the end instead of ".com" or ".co.uk".

The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced in the summer that the application window for new Top Level Domains (TLDs) will open for a three month period from January 12th next year.

Hundreds of bids for domains are expected to be submitted, including dotNYC, dotLONDON, dotBERLIN, and dotCYMRU in a process that will expand greatly the number of domains or web addresses available to internet users.

Mr Neil said: "The Scottish Government is behind this company because we believe there is strong demand for a dotSCOT domain and that it should be run as a public resource on a not-for-profit basis that will quickly become self-financing.

"I am sure the UK Government with its responsibility for internet governance will want to support us.

"Across the board support would undoubtedly strengthen our hand and build momentum behind the bid.

"DotSCOT will be a wonderful asset for establishing a distinctive online identity for many organisations and people who have been described as the worldwide family of Scots and want to demonstrate that identity online."

Buy your new .scot domain from TopDomainDeal.com

Seems like a good idea to me, especially if London etc are to get their own domains. It could really help traditional industries as having a scot domain would show they're the real deal.

Folks, can I be clear? I think Salmond is neither a joke, nor the messiah. I just get frustrated when I see people with power getting bogged down in nonsense such as this. I know it doesn't represent the sum total of his contribution (nor his party's), but I think this type of publicity feeds in to the parochial view that Westminster has of us (and here I'll cite the response to the question about oil revenues asked in Parliament last week as evidence). If Alex wants to be taken seriously, he should stick to serious issues - he has zero competition in Scotland - stay away from this bubblegum and he'll romp home next time round. Jeez, he may romp home regardless.

He's a long way from being the messiah too.. agreed .. but I think the amount of time and effort Eck will be personally expending on this relatively small matter will be just that.. relatively small. I'm pretty sure he knows what issues are more important to the people and the country as a whole.
From a political point of view, I welcome the Westminster view that you mentioned. There can be few things more maddening than having your neighbours telling you you're an eedjit, especially when that same neighbour acts like a total git himself.
You mention Salmond's lack of competition in Scotland.. that is something that should concern every one of us, SNP. Labour, Tory, Green or LibDem supporters. For democracy to work, a coherent opposition is hugely important and right now, we don't have one.

Right underneath: "this joker". You're a liar.

How nice of you to sum me up so succinctly. Thanks.

What a lot of garbage from the SNP. Social deprivation, booze and drug addiction, endemic racism and rising unemployment are but a few of our concerns, and this joker thinks this is worthy of his attention? I almost wish I was English. Almost.

Don't forget rampant sectarianism, the national pastime about which SNP are in seriousl denial. .

Sorry Eric, you're ever so slightly wrong there. Sectarianism is indeed a problem... in west central scotland, ibrox stadium and parkhead stadium. The Highlands dont have any problem, neither do the border areas. The problem is currently the subject of legislation going through Holyrood. The SNP are picking it up and dealing with it now as it has been ignored for the last 300 years.

Does the word multitasking mean anything to you? Thos issuea you mention are all the subjects of policies, initiatives and legislation being presented to Holyrood as we live and breathe right now.

"Good artists borrow.. great artists steal"

Pablo Picasso.

I don't know whether Eck came up with the idea before Boris or not, it doesn't matter. Good ideas aren't the sole preserve of any one person or party. In fact, on 6th May Alex Salmond said as much in his first press conference after winning the election. Wake up!

No. He's the one of the greatest politicians Scotland and the UK have ever had.

Really? Oh dear. I sort of like him, but I can't compete with that level of hero worship. That's kind of how I felt about Bono and Charlie Nicholas in the 80' mind.

Tell that one to Goldie, Gray and Scott. All three of them tried to tell the Scottish electorate that same thing. All three of them are out of a job now because 1) Hardly anybody believed them and 2) .They were wrong.

Cammo and Moribund both know that Eck is a long way away from being a joke. They both know he is far and away the most astute politician currently working anywhere in britain right now. To quote a Daily Mail pundit (sad as hell I know, but you use what you get), Salmond is, "the biggest beast in the jungle by a long way."
