Britain Condemns New Israeli Settlements

Israel

First Posted: 27/09/11 20:19 BST Updated: 27/09/11 20:41 BST

Britain has condemned the decision by Israel to build 1,100 more settlement homes in the West Bank.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said the move was not only illegal but undermined the peace process.

“I condemn today’s news that the Government of Israel is advancing plans for 780 new settlement housing units, with an option of an additional 600 units in the East Jerusalem settlement of Mordot Gilo," he said.

This is a time when all parties should be striving to return to talks and responding to the Quartet statement call to refrain from provocative actions.

Settlement expansion is illegal under international law, corrodes trust and undermines the basic principle of land for peace. We call on the Government of Israel to revoke this decision.”

The decision was also criticised by the United States who said it was "deeply disappointed" and the European Union which said the plan “undermines the talks with Palestinians and should be reversed."

The new homes are set to be built in Gilo on the outskirts of Jerusalem.

Last week Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas addressed the UN General Assembly as part of a move to gain statehood for Palestine.

In his speech he said settlement activity embodied the "colonial military occupation of the land of the Palestine people."

Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu defended the construction project in an interview with the Jerusalem Post.

“We plan in Jerusalem. We build in Jerusalem. Period. The same way Israeli governments have been doing for 44 years, since the end of the 1967 war,” he said.

Why is our government supporting a "Jewish only" housing project? Would we support "whites only" housing?

Condemnation?
As if Netanyahu and his insane supporters care.
Listen carefully Britain - economic sanctions.

MarcEdward, the real problem is that the Palestinians, Syria, Iran, etc, want to annihilate Israel and kill all the Jews. They say it plainly enough, but you pretend you don't know.

For example, Abbas has now made a formal powersharing alliance with Hamas - you know, the Hamas that says in its charter that Muslims should kill all the Jews on the planet.

Abbas stated plainly at the UN that Gaza would be part of the state of Palestine.
Abbas has no qualms with forming an alliance with the Islamo-fascist Hamas -
he thinks it's wonderful.

You cannot even bring yourself to acknowledge this. Why is that?

Zionist greed will be the downfall of Israel. They have their state, behind the 67 borders, everyone that matters accepts this, so why do they keep taking more land, destroying more olive groves and terrorizing more Palestinians? Because they can... so far. But sooner or later even American and European politicians will grow a backbone, and the backlash against Israel will begin. And then it'll be a vote-WINNER to criticize, embargo and distance themselves from Israel. Israel will become the new South Africa.

They are building homes for Jews in their capital. No land is being "taken".

You, and the other Zionists here who defend every Israel theft of Palestinian land and every atrocity committed, represent a far-right minority of Jewish opinion. you are loud, and you are dangerous, but ultimately not for Palestine, you are most dangerous for the very survival of Israel.

According to B’Tselem's 2010 summary, there are 124 official Israeli settlements and 100 informal outposts, and 12 Jerusalem settlements on Palestinian land.

Which is more important to you - human lives or sticking it to the Palestinians?

Israel knows how to do one thing very well: insure that there is unending conflict in their future. Most of the world is against these settlements, yet they persist.

But they seem to always have their hand out. And their spying activities are shameless. A riddle wrapped in an enigma.

I am so tired of our Mr Hague.

He needs to take a leaf out of Prime Minister Cameron's book and start speaking frankly. When Cameron called Palestine "an open-air prison camp" (and then refused to take it back) he won the respect of millions around the world.

So Mr Hague "condemns". Big deal.

Let him ensure that our UK vote at the UN is not an abstention but a vote IN FAVOUR of Palestinian freedom, thereby abiding by the overwhelming majority wish of his own people, the British electorate.

They're trying to make amends. They should be congratulated.
07:25 AM on 09/30/2011
"They're trying to make amends. They should be congratulated. "

Precisely. It is the nature of mature nations that not only do they admit to their mistakes, but they set about rectifying them. We were major slave traders but we were the first major power to abolish it entirely by Act of Parliament - a full THREE DECADES before the US did. That speaks to something we've long called "British Common Sense", and thank God we are now rediscovering it after a disastrous decade of Mr Blair turning us into America's Yes Man.

As the British founder of Quakerism George Fox once said, "My country is every country! And every man my brother!"

"Glad to see the thought police are working hard on this thread to make sure only anti-Israel positions are shown."

We see this nonsense comment on every news service on the internet. Deal with it: the majority of people on this planet want a free Palestine so by sheer probability alone there are going to be more people commenting against an Israel that has massacred its way into existence and will massacre its way back out again.

Please just go read about the Jewish terrorist Irgun and the King David Hotel bombing. Just Google it.

Here we go again. God need not have any position in this debate. Your understanding of international law is grossly over-simplistic and fundamentally flawed. The disputed territory was never part of any Palestinian nation because Palestine was never a nation. Thus, it is impossible that the territory be "occupied Palestinian territory". Impossible.
The United Nations has no authority to legislate otherwise. No authority. They are like shopping-mall security guards on a subway platform. There may be hundreds standing on the subway platform but not even one has law enforcement authority. Together they have the same authority, none.
The territory is DISPUTED and in my view, Israel has the better legal and moral claims. These claims have never been adjudicated. Therefore, alligations of Israeli law breaking are just that, alligations and unproven ones.

"deeply disappointed" is not a 'condemnation'. But to be "disappointed" one needed to have unrealized expectations. Why did the USA expect otherwise? Israel has been building in EJ for the part 44 years.
