Cheryl Cole, James Corden and the stars of Strictly Come Dancing and the X Factor all came together last night to honour some of the nation’s unsung heroes.

The celebrities donned their best black-tie garb for the Pride of Britain Awards, held at the Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Park Lane, and while many of them are seasoned red carpet paraders, Cheryl Cole admitted she was still affected by nerves.

The former X Factor judge tweeted: "How can I still be nervous about red carpets after 10 years.. Eeek! #flutterbies."

Cole was shown on screen at the Awards presenting an award to the troops in Afghanistan to commemorate a decade of British operations in the country.

A courageous young man was also honoured after he saved his father from a raging bull.

Tom Phillips, 11, from Wales, made a split second decision that saved both their lives, jumping behind the wheel of a tractor and nudging the bull away.

TV presenters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly gave Phillips the award for the Child or Teenager of Courage.

Donnelly said: "I can't imagine what Tom must have gone through and how he did what he did."

He added: "To do that at 10 years old is quite a feat."

The ceremony will be televised on ITV1 on Wednesday night.
