Big Ben Is Leaning, Scientists Find

Leaning Tower Of Parliament: Big Ben Is Tilting, Scientists Say

Another British institution is slowly declining - one of the UK's most iconic landmarks - Big Ben.

Researchers have found the clocktower, which is over 150 years old, has a noticable lean - and according to the Daily Mirror, it's causing cracks to appear in the walls of the House of Commons.

Tourists have noticed the tilt - and so has a study for London Underground and the Parliamentary Estates Department.

Professor John Burland, of Imperial College London, said: “I have heard tourists saying, ‘I don’t think it is really vertical’. They are quite right. The tilt is now just about visible. If it started greater acceleration we would have to do something in a few years.”

But it's not all bad news - scientists have worked out that at the current rate it is leaning, it would take 5,000 years to crash into nearby parliamentary building Porticullus House.

Big Ben has 11 floors and at 96 meters - or 315 feet - is taller than the Statue of Liberty.
