Phone Hacking: Les Hinton To Give Evidence Via Video Link

One of Rupert Murdoch’s closest allies will give evidence in the phone hacking committee via video link, it has emerged.

Les Hinton, who worked with Murdoch for more than 50 years, will appear before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on 24 October.

Mr Hinton, a former executive chairman at News International and Wall Street journal publisher, will face questioning from chair John Whittingdale and members including Tom Watson.

A week before his evidence the committee will hear from Mark Lewis, of Taylor Hampton Solicitors and Julian Pike, of Farrer&Co.

Hinton was executive chairman of News International while phone hacking was alledged to have taken place at News of the World.

Hinton testified in 2007 and 2009 that he had not seen any evidence that hacking went beyond a single rogue reporter.

In July Murdoch said he would trust Hinton, who lives in the US, "with my life".
