Confusion Over Circumstances Of Gaddafi's Death After Graphic Video Of Body Broadcast

Muammar Gaddafi

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 20/10/11 16:17 BST Updated: 20/10/11 16:38 BST

As news broke of former Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's death, Al Jazeera broadcast graphic video shot on a mobile phone apparently confirming his death.

The graphic clip, which was subsequently rebroadcast on other networks and is embedded at the bottom of this post, showed the leader naked, limp and bloodied and surrounded by fighters in the street.

It also appeared to show the former leader, who was identifiable mainly by his long hair and clipped beard, being dragged, kicked and mocked by shouting NTC fighters.

Gaddafi appeared to be bleeding from several wounds, though it was not possible to confirm independently that he was definitely dead.

Even as the video and other graphic photographs and images emerged from Sirte there continue to be some confusion as to the exact circumstances of his demise.

Some eyewitness reports said that Gaddafi had been found hiding in a pipe or hole in Sirte and was immediately killed after being shot by a 9mm gun.

Other reports said that Gaddafi had been wounded in both legs and was taken away in an ambulance, before dying later.

Still more reports said that Gaddafi had been initially wounded in a Nato attack on a convoy of vehicles in which he was attempting to escape.

That was denied by the NTC, who said that the Nato attack had not killed Gaddafi.

Gaddafi was probably all that we are told that he was. However, I take no pleasure in the manner of his death, or the endless showing of his bloodied corpse. I had hoped that we were above all this.

I thought Democrats were for equality though? Why do I see so many Democrats cheering this man's death, yet these same people are against the death penalty for rapists and murderers here in America?

First off, all democrats aren't the same. There are certainly supporters of the death penalty within the democratic party. Secondly, you have the same problem in suggesting that even a preponderance of democrats supported summary execution of Gadafi. Thirdly, you miss the point. There is no doubt as to what Gadafi did to his people, or about his involvement with terrorism. The same is certainly not true of many of the inmates on America's death rows. That's a huge distinction no matter where you come down on the death penalty. Certainly, you can't be implying that you are in favor of executing the potentially innocent in some weird attempt at being 'tough on crime.'

..and how do you know someone's political affiliation based on a comment? Sometimes it's clear, other times it is not. I see more comments condemning his execution than not, despite the fact that no one is suggesting his innocence.

So video of Saddam's medical examination/treatment was a great affront to the region, but video of a battered living and later dead Gaddafi being dragged around by a mob is acceptable?

That's their hypocrisy showing again.

Good thing his end timing came in during the month of October, the horrorfest month of the year. Seems thrilling to some and some NOT. Glad he got bloody justice and died a slow painful death.

what video?????? I think you should pull the story. I actually saw one on FB that was pretty disturbing. I did hear today that the U.S. cost for the Libyan revolution was equal to three days expenses for the Iraq war. Sounds like a much better use of funds.. Maybe Obama should have been managing the Iraq war too~

Al Jazeera had posted a video on YouTube of the...civilized people... kicking and dragging Gaddafi's corpse down the street.

Looks like GADAFFI suffered a very horrendous, painful death,
an apt "tribute" to a man one who caused so much pain and suffering
in the world!

most likely because we didn't do the killing... Actually it probably doesn't do much for the rebels in the end.

Ghadafi's video was taken by the rebels and released on Al Jazeera. Once it's out in the world media, it's everywhere. It isn't up the US government whether it's published on US news sites.
Any photo of Bin Laden could only have been taken and released by the US government.
Clear enough?
11:26 PM on 10/20/2011
How come the video is marked "this video is private"? why would you put it on Huffpost and then not allow it to be showed?
11:30 PM on 10/20/2011
i was asking myself the same thing.... actually, i think what happened is that they linked it to someone who changed their viewing rights or something. it's weird.

Video's can be released on Youtube, then pulled by the owner. Showing it after it was pulled would violate copywrite law.

Someone has Gadaffi"s shoelace on ebay up for bids staring at 25 cents, no reserve.
