A two-year-old girl who was run over twice in the street and ignored by 18 people has finally died in hospital after battling her injuries.

The plight of Yue Yue hit the headlines earlier this week after a shocking video of her being knocked down and crushed was uploaded onto the Internet.

The youngster appeared to be in agony as numerous people walked past, choosing to ignore, rather than help her. At one stage she was run over a second time.

Finally, she was rescued and taken to hospital by her mother - but died of brain failure on Friday.

The disturbing incident happened in the southern Chinese town of Foshan in the province of Guandong. Both drivers have been arrested.

According to reports, her family received almost £30,000 to help with payments for the medical treatment following the scenes in Guangfo Hardware Market.

Guangzhou military district general hospital, where she was being treated, said: "Her injuries were too severe and the treatment had no effect."

Commentators say that in China many people are reluctant to help because they fear being blamed, which has led to calls for a Good Samaritan law.

I hate the way they worded the first part of this story.
"A two-year-old girl who was run over twice in the street and ignored by 18 people has FINALLY died in hospital after battling her injuries."

Finally died, as if they were waiting on her to die.
Such a sad story.

I've been all over China. Even at its most organized, traffic is a free for all... and no one cares one bit if they run you over. Human life is almost worthless.

I am so sorry to hear this tragic story. I understand that China are considering bringing in a new law to prevent this type of behaviour happening again.

Why does there have to be a law which forces people to help one another ?
I always thought it was a basic human need and desire to help your fellow man.
I never felt that I should only run to someone's aid because there is a law commanding me to do so.I do it because I hate to see the suffering of others and a primitive hope that somebody would do the same for me in a similar situation.
It is a very strange world we live in.
We don't need wars and viruses to speed our demise along.
We are entirely capable of causing our own downfall with our lack of love and human kindness where only money and power rule the world.

What a shame. The Theory of 'Diffusion of Responsibility' to be blamed. People always assuming that the 'Other' person will help......

G'night beautiful angel. It's such an uncaring world we live in today.

Yes, so sad.

There is experimental evidence to show that as soon as one person responds many others do.
What a cruel manner for this to be seen in practise though :(
