Girls As Young As 11 'Stressed' About Money, Says Girl Guide Survey

Girls and young women are more concerned about money than ever before, a survey has found.

The study showed that 69% of girls and young women aged 11 to 21 named money as a main cause of stress in 2011, compared to 48% in 2010.

The same proportion would also consider putting off having children to allow them to pursue their ideal career, the survey for Girlguiding UK revealed.

The survey found nearly two thirds (62%) of secondary school age girls are concerned about getting a job when they finish their education.

For those who plan to leave education and training at 18, more than one in five (22%) said this is because they cannot afford to study, up from just 8% in 2009.

Almost all 11 to 21-year-olds surveyed believed that having children would affect their career, but just one in five said they would not let their career affect when they chose to have children.

Despite concerns over their future, however, 89% of girls and young women said they were happy most of the time - and 35% said they were very happy.

Girls aged 11-21 expect to have a full-time job at 21, be financially independent at 22, move in with a partner and have their own home at 23, get married at 25 and have their first child at 26.

The third annual Girls' Attitudes Survey, which looked at perception of key social, political and economic issues, also found that a third of 16 to 21-year-olds "need a couple of drinks for courage before a night out".

More than one in 10 thought that a good night out was "one where you can't remember anything the next day".
