Starlings Arrive On The Scottish Borders Signalling The Start Of Winter (Pictures)

A murmuration of starlings turned the sky black above the town of Gretna on Tuesday.

Millions of birds put on a spectacular aerial display before looking for a roost for the night in an annual event that, for the locals, marks the start of winter.

The starlings flock together for protection, and can reach speeds of up to 20mph as they dive and swoop.
