Coldplay kicked off the MTV European Music Awards ceremony in Northern Ireland with a rousing rendition of their hit Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, with frontman Chris Martin calling to the crowd at Belfast's Odyssey Arena: "Shout for Justin Bieber!"

Katy Perry won the first award for best live act. "This is amazing," she said. "I just played at this arena ten days ago. This is my favourite award because my fans mean so much to me. I want to say it's really easy to get a song - steal, download and listen - but it takes a commitment to go to a live show. I'm so tired but it's all worth it. I love you, thank you."

Host Selena Gomez introduced presenter David Hasselhoff, who handed over the Best Female award to Lady Gaga. Receiving her award, Lady Gaga - dressed in a bizarre fan-type dress with a black hat that covered her face, said: "Thank you so much. I'm so grateful. I have had a lot of Botox and it is true."

Perry then presented the global icon award to Queen. "They changed my life. The legacy of Freddy Mercury will forever be burning in the skies at 200 degrees," she said, introducing Brian May and Roger Taylor, who received the award.

Bruno Mars, who was nominated for four awards, performed Marry You with an old-school band, before Jessie J - dressed in a gold catsuit and matching glitzy shoes - burst out of a golden safe to perform her hit, Price Tag.

Justin Bieber won the coveted prize of Best Male, beating rivals Eminem, Kanye West, David Guetta and Bruno Mars. "I voted for Kanye West but whatever," he said as he received his gong. "I want to say thanks to all my fans and my family. You guys are the reason I am on stage right now. Never say never."

The teenager also took home the Best Pop award - addressing claims that he fathered a child with a young fan, calling them "crap".He said: "Yo, two awards in the past 60 minutes. There's been a lot of crap on the internet lately, so thanks for this."

The Red Hot Chili Peppers then performed from the city's famed Ulster Hall, the first of two performances from outside the Odyssey Arena. Later, Snow Patrol's performance at the City Hall was screened live to the ceremony. The band stopped traffic in the city, where they were joined by 15,000 fans.

Eminem scooped the award for Best Hip Hop Act. The rapper was not in Belfast to receive his prize, but sent a message saying: "Apologies I couldn't make it. As you can see, I'm in the studio but hopefully I will see you soon." Bruno Mars won the Best Push award, ahead of Jessie J, Katy B, Wiz Khalifa, LMFAO and Far East Movement.

Lady Gaga gave one of the stand-out performances of the night, belting out her hit Marry the night from a giant, white planet on the stage before baring her tights-clad bottom to the audience. Gomez performed various skits during the ceremony, where she dressed up as Darth Vader, wore a huge pink poodle perm and morphed into David Hasselhoff.
