Student Protest Pictures: Striking Shots From Day Of Demonstration

Thousands of students and activists have marched through central London have joined forces to protest against rising tuition fees.

More than 4,000 officers have been put on duty to guard the streets: the largest number of police on the streets since August's riots.

Uniting with Occupy London Stock Exchange (LSX) protesters in Trafalgar Square, pictures show the marching protesters clashing with authority, the demonstrators' route bordering closely with tightly controlled police lines.

Hastily erected tents were just as quickly cleared by anticipating police in Trafalgar square, as young people climbed on statues and swarmed the area.

Forces patrolled the streets on mounted guard, while the sheer energy of the protesters could be felt walking along the streets of London. Creative marchers made their feelings known through acerbic costumes, one dressed as a bloodied butcher with a Nick Clegg mask on.

Scotland Yard has estimated that 2,000 protesters took part in the march, while the organisers of the protest put the figure closer to 10,000.

Demonstrators in the Square were chanting "no democracy, no peace" and handing out copies of the newspaper - "one year on students march again".
