Actress Demi Moore has announced she will divorce Ashton Kutcher, her husband of six years.
In a statement Moore said:
"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life.
This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation."
Kutcher responded to the news via Twitter.
"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," Kutcher said via Twitter. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
Kutcher and Moore married in 2005. Their relationship had been subject to much speculation in recent months, with rumours of marital problems.
The couple began dating in 2003, making headlines partly due to their age difference of 16 years.
Kutcher is now 33, and Moore is 49.
Since being married the couple founded the DNA Foundation, which fights sexual slavery.
Moore and Kutcher frequently used Twitter to communicate with each other as millions of fans followed. Moore will presumably be looking for a new Twitter name, however - her ID on the social network is currently @mrskutcher.
The day before their sixth wedding anniversary earlier this year, Moore ominously quoted philosopher Epictetus when she said: "When we are offended at any man's fault, turn to yourself and study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger."
Moore was previously married to Bruce Willis for 13 years, and with whom she had three daughters, before divorcing in 2000.
